Synopsis : In the backdrop of one of India’s biggest environmental hazards that is quickly turning once fertile farmlands into arid wasteland, where suicide is evolving into a widely accepted cultural norm, as debt ridden and famine stricken farmers routinely kill themselves, two eight-year-old children try to make sense of life, death and disease as they try to save their precious fish. Landmarc Films known for Vazandar, State award-winning Redu, National award-winning Ringan, Gachchi amongst others, is all set to release their next ‘Pipsi’ on 27^th July 2018. The film’s poster was recently launched across all social networking sites. We see two protagonists, a young girl and a young boy on the poster which makes it very endearing for all, especially children.

Produced and presented by Vidhi Kasliwal’s Landmarc Films, Pipsi has a rural backdrop and the poster depicts that it is about the unwavering friendship of two little kids, which triumphs against all odds. The film stars two kid marvels Maithili Patwardhan and Sahil Joshi in the lead. The audiences have already got a taste of their chemistry in the teaser released recently. Maithili Patwardhan went on to win Best child actor at the recently concluded 55^th Maharashtra State Awards.

Written by Saurabh Bhave and Directed by Rohan Deshpande, the film has a well documented and researched storyline and has made a mark for itself in various national and international film festivals. Pipsi was selected at NITTE International Film Festival (NIFF) 2018 and the 58^th ZLIN International Film Festival earlier this year. It has also been included in the upcoming Busan International Film Festival. Closer back home, it was the only Indian film to be selected in the Half Ticket section of MAMI last year. It was also screened at the Smile International Film Festival for Children and Youth 2017, in Delhi.

Many unique titles have been used for Marathi films in recent past. One such latest addition in the list of hatke titles in Marathi is ‘Biscuit’. The teaser poster of this film was recently revealed online. Padmashri Shewale of Expansion films Pvt. Ltd. Has produced this film & even the story of this film belongs to her.

The screenplay for ‘Biscuit’ is written by Sachin Darekar, the dialogues are by Namdeo Murkute & the cinematography of this film is done by Kishore Raut. The soulful music of this film is composed by Chaitanya Adkar. The film stars Shashank Shende, Pooja Nayak, senior actor Jayant Sawarkar, Ashok Samarth & child artist Divesh Medge.

The teaser poster of this film has created a lot of buzz about the film especially on social media. Though the exact date is not confirmed as yet but the film will be releasing in theatres in the month of November.

Review:

It is debatable how much you can get inspired from a particular film. What is the line beyond which it would be unethical? If you can ignore this debate, Athang by debutant director Milind Gawli is not a bad film.

The film begins with Shilpa (Tanvi Hegde) buying a rose for a cardiologist she has fallen in love with by the name Dr. Sardesai played by Milind Gawli. Tanvi is a promising art student and is so obsessed with her feelings for Sardesai that she has made numerous portraits of him. He is almost twice her age, married and also expecting a child soon. Tanvi, however, is convinced that Sardesai loves her back. But we as viewers are not fully convinced and therein lies the crucial element of the film. In the second half we witness the same events unfolding but from the point of view of Dr. Sardesai.

The decision to narrate the plot from two perspectives is certainly novel for marathi cinema, but rather unfortunately it is directly lifted from the French film ‘He loves me, he loves me not’. Now, I haven’t seen the French film, but one look at the Wikipedia entry lets you know that Athang has been ripped off from it.

But, Athang, despite its inspiration does not turn-out to be a film that holds your attention during its whole duration. The main trouble here is the poor performance by Tanvi Hegde. The camerawork, music and production design too are ordinary, but a solid performance by Tanvi would have made us overlook all these aspects. Shilpa is a complex character with rather sinister dark shades and Tanvi does not seem up to the challenge. Milind Gawli as Dr. Sardesai is a little more believable and his scenes with Smita Shevale are quite good. The second half thus turns out to be lot better than the first, a rare instance in Indian cinema for sure. But the film cannot shake of the rather TV drama like feel to it all. The staging and shot taking also remind of the marathi cinema of the 90s.

Overall:

Despite the directly lifted but nevertheless interesting way of narrating the plot, Athang works only partially because of some poor acting and some ordinary technical aspects.

Music of the much awaited Marathi film “Ek Hazarachi Note” was released by the Eminent Film Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra at Swatantraveer Savarakar Rashtriya Samarak Auditorium, Shivaji Park on 15th April 2014.

The Music Director of the film is Shailendra Barve, a National Award Winner was present along with singers Neha Rajpal, Vivek Naik and Amol Bawdekar on the occasion. Also present was Shrihari Sathe, the internationally acclaimed Indian Filmmaker, who is the Director and Producer of Ek Hazarchi Note. This movie is his first Indian venture.
The story of the movie has been written by Shrikant Bojewar who has also penned its 5 songs. Ek Hazarchi Note is a simple yet significant movie portraying the drama amongst the common folk, especially in rural areas, who tend to enjoy all the little things in life.

Star cast includes veteran actor Usha Naik with Sandeep Pathak, Shrikant Yadav, Ganesh Yadav, Pooja Nayak and Devendra Gaikwad. Ming Kai Leung (USA) is the Director of Photography and Art Director is Prashant Bidkar. While Kalyani Kulkarni Gugle is the Costume Designer and Make Up is by Santosh Gilbile. Ranjit Gugle and Shekhar Sathe are the Executive Producers. The sound designer is Thorsten Minning (Germany).

Shrihari Sathe said that the film revolves around the fact that poor folk have to face life as it comes with little control over what happens to them. Even when money comes, it brings problems. They unfortunately have to take things as they come and are not in a position to retaliate when wrong is done to them. People wielding power have inhuman control over their destiny.

“Ek Hazarachi Note” is produced by him under his banner “Infinitum Productions”. Prior to this Shrihari has produced two feature length films, both in the US. “Pervertigo” (2012) world premiered at the Warsaw Film Festival was also shown at Mumbai Film Festival. The second film he produced was “It Felt like Love” which premiered at 2013 Sundance Film Festival last year and was screened at about dozen festivals all over the world. It released theatrically in March 2014 in the US.
