Story Outline :

Deva – Ek Atrangi Marathi Movie Review:

Ankush Chaudhari is without a doubt an actor of great calibre. He has a knack of playing underplayed performances with subtle perfection. He started the year 2017 on that note with his performance in ‘Ti Saddhya Kay Karte’. But every now & then Ankush is a part of a film that has been forcefully made to be a ‘commercial entertainer’ & then Ankush becomes a strangely different actor! All his subtle charm goes away instead we see his laughable antics to project himself as a ‘hero’.

That’s exactly the case with the much awaited ‘Deva – Ek Atrangi’. Ankush’s performance in the film is as tasteless & spineless as the overall film. I haven’t seen the original Malayalam film ‘Charlie’ of which ‘Deva’ is an official remake. So I can’t judge ‘Deva’ on any other terms other than its own. To me the basic plot itself is so basic & lacking the possibility of giving birth to an entire film based on it. But again there are films that have poor plots but their treatments interest us. In case of ‘Deva’ the treatment too is as horrible as the plot.

So the film starts with introduction of a famous travel blogger turned book writer (by simply compiling her travel blogs together) ‘The Maya Deshmukh’ (as one of her “fans” call her). So ‘The Maya’ (Tejaswini Pandit) has become a sensation in the world of literature (but wait didn’t she simply write ‘travel blogs’? who cares!) every publishing house wants her to write for them. But she cannot find a subject for her new book. One of her friend says come with me to ‘Konkan’ you’ll find you’re subject. A writer going places to find a subject for her book! (who does that?)

Now Maya is staying in a house of an artist who doesn’t visit his home that often. An artist who is never shown in the film creating any of his art forms, yes its ‘Deva’. He paints he sculpts but never in front of the camera. I guess he is camera shy. So in that house ‘Maya’ finds a freshly crafted ‘graphic novel’ of sorts! One that shows how Deva befriends a thief who comes at his house at night & later goes on an adventure to rob other homes with him! (why? Because he is an ‘Atrangi’!)

Slowly Maya starts finding out ‘Deva’ helps random strangers from a beggar on the streets to a doctor (Spruha Joshi) attempting suicide! Just before the interval Maya finds out that Deva is at a lodge nearby again saving a little girl from something bad happening to her. Maya runs behind him & Deva (who knows her too) looks into the mirror smiles but doesn’t stop his jeep (why?).

Post interval the film becomes completely stationary as the plot is completely focused now at an old age home of sorts made by Deva. All characters are here & they are bonding over to create some kind of drama in the film, one that never works. But Deva isn’t present. We get it ‘Deva’ is like the dumbest metaphor for ‘God’. Who loves everyone helps everyone but doesn’t belong to any one person.

But the root this film has taken to present this metaphor is an illogical mess. Every character’s action is never powered by reason. It’s simply done to add to the legacy of ‘Deva’. We are never explained why ‘Deva’ is the way he is. What is it that made him such a person? Maybe again that would be because he is a metaphor for ‘god’. But for god’s sake god needs better metaphors & better plots revolving them.

Overall:

‘Deva’ is one of Ankush Chaudhari’s worst films till date. His performance too is plainly single toned. Even if you’re his fan it would be really difficult to like this film! Though you can still try if you want to!

Colors Marathi has started an innovative program about Pandharpur Vari called Palkhi. The program will be broadcast everyday at 6:30 pm from 6th July onwards. The program tracks daily coverage of the Vari- a pilgrimage to Pandharpur.

Young singer Kartiki Sange and Charudutt Afale will be speaking about the spiritual journey and its historical significance. Various Marathi actors like Makrand Anaspure, Renuka Shahane, Chinmay Mandlekar, Pandharinath Kambli, Madhugandha Kulkarni, Dr. Salil Kulkarni, Ravindra Mankani will be sharing their experiences about Vari in this program.

International Marathi Film Festival (IMFF) which felicitates the Marathi films on international level will be held in Mauritius very soon. The renowned festival which will be organised joint collaboration by Shardul Creations and CMA Foundation at Mauritius in June is already creating waves in the film industry. The unveiling ceremony of the Trophy of the International Marathi Film Festival recently took place in a grand function in Mumbai by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. Prominent personalities from various fields were present at the function such as Shirish Rane of Shardul Creations, Virendra Ramdhan, President of Hinu House Mauritius, Chairman of Best Committee Nana Ambole, MLA Pankaj Bhujbal, director cum actor Vijay Patkar, Chairman of Mhada Prasad Lad, President of Maharashtra Vyapari Peth Anant Bhalekar, Mahendra Singh of Tirupati Balaji Group, Pareshji Seth of CMA group, Rahul Patil from R.R.Group, L.C.Pujari of Alta Vista,Actor Adesh Bandekar. The famous comic duo of Gangubai and Chhu had the audience in splits and at the same time created awareness about social issues through television soap and a play. Now the audience are in for a treat as they will get to watch the hilarious duo on the silver screen as well. The film will also sport the same title that is Kumari Gangubai Non Matric and the audience will get to see the jugalbandi between popular Marathi stars Nirmiti Sawant Vs Pandhariath Kamble and Nagesh Bhosale Vs Anand Ingale. The film is produced by Vidyadhar Pathare’s Iris Production and will be presented by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. The story, screenplay, dialogues are written by Rajesh Deshpande who had originally penned the story, screenplay and dialogue for the serial and the play. Deshpande who had earlier directed both the television soap and the play will direct the film as well. The film will be released on September 27^th.

A decade ago the duo of Gangubai and Chhu had made their first appearance on the small screen. Gangubai solved the problems of common people in her own signature style and Chhu helped her out. Gangubai’s generous nature and her expertise in solving varied problems in the playful manner had made her quite popular among the audience. As a weekly soap, Gangubai had even created a record for doing more episodes as compared to other weekly soaps. Later the play which was adapted from the television soap and starred the same actors as the teleserial had also received tremendous response from the audience.

Now after gaining remarkable popularity in both the mediums now the duo of Gangubai and Chu will make a grand entry on the silver screen. One central theme with the same star cast presenting in all three mediums that is Television, theatre and films by the same producer – director duo is also a kind of record created by team Gangubai. In the television soap and play, while solving the social problems, Gangubai had tried to make a comment on the social issues in satirical manner. In the film Gangubai will solve the social problems through politicians. To solve the problems of the common man Gangubai is going to stand for the elections. Writer-director Rajesh Deshpande is known for through knowledge of political and social issues and his trademark style of creating hilarious situations by taking jibes on the system. The audience will get to see many such hilarious scenes in the film.

The music of the film is composed by Shailendra Barve and the lyrics are penned by Rajesh Deshpande. Sujit Kumar and Rajesh Bidve had done the choreographed the dance sequences in the film. Ace Cinematographer Sanjay Jadhav who is noted for his signature style has handled the cinematography. The film is presented by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures who had earlier presented successful films like the first 3D Marathi film  Zapatlela 2 and 72 Miles Ek Pravas. Vidhyadhar Pathare’s Iris Production which has earlier produced Kumari Gangubai Non Matric, Agnishikha and many other popular Television soaps has produced the film. Kumari Gangubai Non Matricwill be released in all over Maharashtra on September 27^th.
