  • Review: Welcome Home (2019)
  • Director: Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukthankar
  • Star Cast: Mrunal Kulkarni, Sumeet Raghavan, Dr. Mohan Agashe, Uttara Baokar, Spruha Joshi, Siddharth Menon, Deepa Shriram, Prasad Oak, Sarang Sathaye, Irawati Harshe, Jitendra Joshi, Subodh Bhave & child artist: Pranjali Shrikant
  • Screenplay: Sumitra Bhave
  • Producer: Abhishek Sunil Phadtare, Vinay Bele, Ashwini Sidhwani & Deepak Kumar Bhagat

Quick Viewpoint: Certain films avoid being ‘certain’ in many ways. Welcome Home’s uncertainty is it’s biggest strength. It’s like a breeze of fresh air but air that has a conscience of it’s own.

What Works?

  • The singular most important aspect one needs to address here is how essential good actors are in this film. As usual though in a Bhave-Sukthankar film! These filmmakers use their actors so organically that the whole set up of the film never feels like a set up, it just feels like an actually existing world. Mrunal Kulkarni under Bhave-Sukthankar feels completely at ease, it’s like we always knew there was this intense (at the same time subtle) actor waiting to explode out of her! It won’t be exaggeration to call this her career defining performance!
  • Story telling in films usually manipulates the time factor. Sometimes certain films do not skip or jump time as normally most of the films do. They linger over it, they let you go through the suffocated routine of the time passing. Smallest of things are amplified to their actual size in life. It’s like being trapped with those characters in a very specific time frame of their life. All of this results into a very lively experience of human existence & ‘Welcome Home’ does exactly that!
  • ‘Welcome Home’ gets deeper into our upper middle class society’s skin. It tries to experiment and find what if so & so happens & our people are made to instantaneously react to it! What if an independent middle aged woman suddenly decides to leave her husband’s house & come back to her previous home (or her parent’s home). The results of this experiment are not really demotivating! While going through this the film stumbles upon it’s main subject of research which is the idea of home! And how does a modern day independent woman explores it.
  • Usually ‘coming of age’ is a genre trait that can be spotted in films mainly with teenage protagonists. But here Mrunal Kulkarni’s character comes off age in a very organic and gradual process! And again the time factor let’s us actually understand the process better & how & exactly what triggered the process! One of the main triggers is a charm of character played by Sumeet Raghavan!
  • As said earlier uncertainty is Welcome Home’s biggest strength, by uncertainty I do not mean in terms of the narrative and what would happen next in their life, but in terms of what exactly do we interpret from the proceedings. And it’s something that viewers need to experience on their own in a theatre!

What Fails?

  • Spruha Joshi though has given a much smoother performance when compared to her recent filmography but the only flaw of the film rests on her little track in the film. Her presence within the ‘home’ is quite essential in the film, but the point film wished to make through the rest of her track doesn’t quite gel in the scheme of things and doesn’t feel essential to the film. Moreover the track had a really irritating song.

Final Verdict: In the rich & diverse filmography of filmmakers Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukthankar, ‘Welcome Home’ is a welcome entry! Like in most of their films they have again explored our societal patterns through the case study of family dynamics in a well educated, cultured upper middle class!

Ever since the news of Bhaurao Karhade’s new film ‘Baban‘ was out a fair number of audiences & critics who loved ‘Khwada’ were excited for the film. But after the release though the critics were divided about the film the audiences have thoroughly loved the film. Especially in the rural parts of Maharashtra ‘Baban’ has re-created the ‘Sairat-Wave’!

The audiences can relate to the protagonist of the film & his surroundings very easily & hence ‘Baban’ has become such a huge hit. Moreover the amount of success for ‘Baban’ even after not belonging to any film studio like ‘Zee’ or ‘Colors’, is inspiring for many small scale filmmakers who wish to be successful by making Marathi films!

So far in 10 days ‘Baban’ has collected 8.5 crores all over Maharashtra. The music of the film too is superhit among the audiences. Along with the hero’s (Bhausaheb Shinde) performance Bhaurao Karhade’s own performance as hero’s father is being highly appreciated by the audiences!

Baban Movie Review:

Bhaurao Karhade’s debut film ‘Khwada’ had many things going for it from a never before seen communal backdrop, to the raw texture of the film & a meaningful end. But ‘Khwada’ had a very little & compact conflict. Everything else was woven around it. The basic problem with ‘Baban’ is that it struggles to find an exact conflict. What is it really about? Is it a love story? Or the story of an underdog fighting against the system around? Or is it a quintessential ‘masala’ film with bits of romance, action, emotional drama & humour? Well it’s all the above at different instances, neither of them are strong enough to make the film impactful. And the craftsmanship essential to bind these three or more varieties of filmmaking is completely missing in ‘Baban’.

However the film still has a few heartfelt moments that reflect the reality in most of the rural regions in Maharashtra today. But they are scattered throughout the film & in totality they don’t really make a lasting impression.

Another major flaw is the lead actor’s limitations as an actor. Throughout the film we see him in 3-4 stock expressions & his body language too is similarly out of options. Comparatively the film has a decent supporting cast (of either non-actors or first timers), Bhaurao Karhade himself amuses us in the first half or so but later his monotonous performance of the carefree drunken father becomes a little boring. The actress who plays Baban’s mother is probably the finest of the lot, though with just a few dialogues she ends up shining the brightest mostly because of the way she emotes through her eyes.

The film keeps playing around in the narrative by matching every serious scene with the romantic track of the film, Baban is a college going student from the beginning to the end of the film. But the sole purpose for this college backdrop appears to be the romantic track, & for the introduction of the antagonist named ‘Abhay’. Now Abhay is backed by a wealthy politician cum gang leader. Now Abhay, Baban & the gang leader all belong to the same ‘community’ so the film isn’t a inter-community struggle in any way, this might be denoting that today there’s only one class difference; the poor & the rich. So thematically this track had so much depth! But sadly this track is ruined by repetition & even poor execution of ‘action’ scenes. They didn’t need to be as over the top as ‘south’ films but they still need to be well choreographed & executed.

Had ‘Baban’ wanted to be an out & out pot boiler, it could have well believed in a modern day Marathi ‘angry young man’ or it could have completely focused itself to be a dramatic love story. It could have still belonged to both worlds with better writing & crafting of the script, but it’s in no man’s land. The songs are in fact very melodious but in the scheme of things they add little to the film & instead keep disrupting the narrative of the film.

The most off putting aspect of ‘Baban’ for me was the resolution of the conflict/conflicts. The film ends up being forcefully over dramatic by using hard hitting realism as a device. It just doesn’t make any sense in the film’s basic conflict that felt interesting at some point, neither does it upheld the romantic angle of the film.

Overall:

‘Baban’ definitely has a strong influence of ‘Sairat’ in it’s romantic track, & Karhade’s own Khwada’s impact on the protagonist’s struggle against the higher (rich) class, yet ‘Baban’ could have groomed into an interesting crowd pleasing entertainer had it worked harder on paper.

Director of national award winning film ‘Khwada’, Bhaurao Karhade is all set with his second release ‘Baban’. ‘Baban’ is a rural love story with a political backdrop.

  • Raw Flavour of the Film

Director Bhaurao Karhade is specifically known for projecting the raw reality around us in his films. And the trailer & songs of ‘Baban’’ reflect the same. The audiences feel more connected to a world that is very much like the world they live in. We are no longer fascinated by fancy fake world of love stories.

Baban marathi Movie Actor Actress

  • The Rustic Hero – Bhaurao Shinde

Bhaurao Shinde continues his partnership with Bhaurao Karhade after ‘Khwada’. His rustic looks & his unique style of dialogue delivery is certainly one of the strengths of the film that will attract the audiences.

  • The Social Connection

This film’s hero belongs to an economically backward class. His love story & his overall struggle is against the capitalist class who exploit the poor people. In a way this is a very important social connection with the audiences.

  • The Music!

The songs of the film are already popular among the audiences & have become viral on social media especially the soulful soft romantic number ‘Saaj Hyo Tuza’ which also represents the soul of the film perfectly.

  • The Authentic Language!

Since most of the actors including the hero of the film come from the same region where the story is set in the language they speak looks completely natural. It’s irritating to see urban actors imitating fake rural accents in our films this authenticity of ‘Baban’ makes it more exciting for the audiences.

Ye Re Ye Re Paisa Marathi Movie Review:

Ye Re Ye Re Paisa will certainly manage to give you a few laughs. But the overall complications make the film difficult to sit through. Sanjay Jadhav before his Duniyadari days made two dark thrillers (Ringa Ringa & Checkmate) which could stand head & shoulders above other Marathi films in that genre. This director is capable of pulling off different visual & cinematic feats if he wishes too. But his obsession of making what sells has made him restrict his abilities.

Ye Re Ye Re Paisa in parts can remind us of any random south Indian movie dubbed in Hindi, telecasted on every movie channel these days. And in parts it also reminds us of 90s Bollywood masala movies. The problem is not what it reminds us of! The problem is it doesn’t add anything to them! The plot is an excuse for a comedy of errors. However the errors on their own need to have some strength to derive situational comedy out of them. This isn’t the case.

At some point in the first half we are hinted that the film would now turn towards the ‘heist comedy’ genre. But the heist part is tastelessly silly & never really explored in depth. So the film relies almost completely on characters & actors playing them to win over the audiences. Sanjay Narvekar as ‘Anna’ a loan recovery agent cum gangster succeeds to some extent in getting our acceptance. Sadly Siddharth Jadhav who has a terrific sense of comic timing & has been a part of quite of few crazy comedies helmed by Kedar Shinde doesn’t make any impact. Umesh Kamat is usually a decent actor but he doesn’t have a lot to do in the film. Maybe a love track would have made Umesh a little more important to some audiences. Tejaswini Pandit has many limitations as an actress, limitations which come in way of comedy! Anand Ingle plays a formulaic supporting comic character seen usually in those dubbed south Indian movies. Bijoy Anand seen long back in a few Hindi films plays an interesting character which needed a better treatment. Mrinal Kulkarni’s character though important to the film, has little to do.

The film is strangely edited to speed up the narrative. An experiment (I am not sure if that’s the right word) that only confuses the audiences rather than amusing them. It’s again a trait from south India, where a few dedicated fans of those films believe that too much editing is good editing! One of the positives of the film is it’s visual feel though a more serious narrative could have really complemented it. ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ definitely had potential if it had some sort of situational humour in it & a better written screenplay.

The film used different color grading for an important narrative scene in different ways representing the change of perspective. Surprisingly it is really well executed & appears as inventive as it sounds. But again all of this deserved a better film to belong too. Sanjay Jadhav’s Duniyadari was in my opinion a poorly directed film, but it had it’s strength in the content through the original novel. His other films after Duniyadari were average in every way. Ye Re Ye Re Paisa is a film that is disastrously fast paced & loud, yet there are few moments that tell it had potential. An ideal commercial entertainer doesn’t necessarily need a thought provoking message or a moral of the story & it can work on simply moments that are entertaining & have a repeat value to them. Ye Re Ye Re Paisa on the whole is an exhausting experience, a one line narrative that was narrated as if the film was ‘Interstellar’ or ‘Inception’.

Overall:

If you’ve seen all the promos & the trailer of the film you’ve already seen the better comic punches. The rest of the punches never really work making this journey full of sound & fury signifying nothing!
