Rating: 3.5/5

The idea of presenting few short films as a whole film is slowly gaining acceptance. It doesn’t come as a surprise to see the genre entering Marathi cinema, as newer or experimental topics have been a regular feature in here.

Bioscope, an amalgamation of four short films, is an interesting start to the genre in Marathi. Although not each of the four films can boast of being superlative, the experience as a whole is certainly pleasing due to the progressiveness on display in each, both in terms of the subject and treatment.

Dil-E-NadanDili E Nadaan - Bioscope
Based on a Ghazal by Mirza Ghalib
Director: Gajendra Ahire
Cast: Neena Kulkarni and Suhas Bhalekar
Writer: Gajendra Ahire
Music: Narendra Bhide
The story takes place in today’s Indore. A classical Ghazal singer (Neena Kulkarni) has been living with her musician friend (Suhas Bhalekar) since 30 years. The two of them are trying to come to terms to the fading days of gharana music and mostly spend their time reminiscing the old, golden years.

This one transports you to the Nawabi Indori Gharana of music. Beautiful tunes, rich production design (the revolving fan standing out) androyal Urdu dialogues continuously enchant you. But the film works as a whole due to the amazing bond between the two characters and the ending moments. Showing the two of them purely as friends is a bold statement. Neena Kulkarni and Suhas Bhalekar provide excellent performances and they also share some amazing chemistry.

Ek Hota KauEk Hota Kau - Bioscope
Based on a poem by Saumitra
Director: Viju Mane
Cast: Kushal Badrike, Spruha Joshi
Writer: Viju Mane
Music: Soham Pathak
A young garage owner (Kushal Badrike) falls for a beautiful girl (Spruha Joshi) of a respected family. More than the social difference, it is his skin color that is stopping him from sharing his love for her.

The age old story of a poor guy falling for a rich and upper class girl gets another dimension of the issue of complexion. The undying stigma attached to the dark-skinned in Indian society is presented here in a bold and mature manner; the protagonist is smartly linked with crow. But the story appears dragged after a point. Thankfully, the killer moment in the climax saves the day. Kushal Badrike perfectly molds himself in his character. Spruha Joshi is fine too.

BailBail - Bioscope
Based on the work of a folk poet Loknath Yashwant
Director: Girish Mohite
Cast: Mangesh Desai, Smita Tambe, Uday Sabnis and Sagar Karande
Writer: Abay Dakhane
Music: Avinash-Vishwajeet

The film focuses on the sorry state of affairs of cotton farmers by highlighting the plight of a famer named Panjab (Mangesh Desai). From his small village in the interiors of Maharashtra, he visits Mumbai to join the protest for increasing rates of raw cotton.

This is another not-so-novel subject narrated differently. The sorry condition of a cotton fameris arrived at in a creative manner. The fact that they receive almost peanuts for their produce while the clothes made out of it are sold in an abnormal price is a very appealing manner of highlighting their plight. But the film lacks proper flow. Also, an important event in the tale isn’t presented clearly. Mangesh Desai is fully believable as a helpless farmer. Smita Tambe is also perfect as his wife.

MitraaMitraa - Bioscope
Based on a short story by Vijay Tendulkar
Director: Ravi Jadhav
Writer: Vijay Tendulkar and Ravi Jadhav
Cast: Veena Jamkar, Mrunmayee Deshpande
Music: Salil Kulkarni
The period is 1947. A boy (Sandeep Khare) is eager to share his feelings for his childhood friend Sumitra (Veena Jamkar). But Sumitra loves another girl (Mrunmayee Deshpande).

Story of a lesbian girl based in India in 1947 is something out-of-the-box considering queers’ struggle to gain acceptance even in 2015. Mitraa is a bold, beautiful and unconventional take on the issue of lesbianism. The protagonist’s manner of disclosing her sexual preference and the reactions to it sums up its new-age-ness. But you really can’t ignore its visually stunning frames despite the film being in black and white. One wouldn’t mind watching it as a full-length film. In a difficult role, Veena Jamkar provides a thoroughly skillful act. Sandeep Khare is dedicated as her childhood friend. Mrunmayee Deshpande plays her part well too.

Every kid from 70s and 80s will know what a bioscope is. The Bioscope was a childhood memory spinning various tales from those moving images. Bioscope title song revokes that same nostalgia.

The title song is sung by legendary actor and singer Raghuveer Yadav. The song beautifully synopses four short stories directed by four directors. The lyrics for this song are by Viju Mane, who has directed a short story in this film. The music has been given by Sachin-Jitendra. The video of the title song shows different shots of the film and Raghuveer Yadav recording this mesmerizing song. The tune immediately reminds us of the Bioscope-wala calling children!

The film releases on 17 July.

Marathi films have always been a director’s arena. Rather than stardom and glamour quotient, Marathi audience prefers movies by a good director. Bioscope is an interesting projects where four different directors have teamed up to make a single film. The film has four independent stories woven around four poems and stories. Bioscope has directors like Ravi Jadhav, Gajendra Ahire, Girish Mohite and Viju Mane. Ravi Jadhav’s Mitra is based on a poem by Sandip Khare. Ahire’s Dil_E-Nadan is based on a gajhal by Mirza Galib. Mitra has also won National Award in short films category and been shown in various international film festivals.

Ravi Jadhav said, We came together at an event in Thane. While discussing we hit upon this idea. It was a very different concept of making four short films and create a single film around it with a thread of poems.”Bioscope Directors

Viju Mane thinks this experience was very creative. “Every poem has a story. Presenting that germ was challenging and satisfying. We discussed about various poems and started creating a script around them. Working along with three other directors was enthralling experience.”

Girish Mohite was initially concerned about disagreements between directors. “Whenever ego arises in any relationship or work, problems start. But when we keep this ego aside and come together as a single mind, something beautiful like this art is conceived” Ahire said. “This was an experiment for me. Entire experience made me realize about how other directors are thinking and how their creativity becomes film.”

The Bioscope is produced by Abhay SHevde and Golden Tree Entertainment Pvt Ltd. Audience is also very much interested in watching this film with four different stories.

While Marathi film lovers and film industry have been looking forward to the release of the most ambitious and unique film of the year ‘Bioscope’, it has added another feather to its cap. ‘Mitra’, a short film depicting a complex tale of lesbians which is one of the four short films of ‘Bioscope’ has been selected in competition section of the prestigious ‘Kashish Mumbai Queer International Film Festival’.

This will be ‘Mitra’s world premier. The festival, which is into its 5th year, will be held between 21st and 25th May in Mumbai.

After a stupendous success of ‘Time Pass’ and ‘Balak Palak’, Ravi Jadhav presents his next offering in the form of ‘Mitra’. A complex tale of lesbians, the story is set in 1947. Ravi captures the mood and era with brilliant play of light and shades in a haunting black and white imagery. ‘Mitra’ is based on celebrated writer Vijay Tendulkar’s short story of the same name and has a backdrop of a poem by the current generation’s the most sought after poet Sandeep Khare. Starring Khare himself in a prominent role, it also features Mrinmayee Deshpande and Veena Jamkar in the lead.

‘Bioscope’ is a unique experiment in Marathi where four prominent directors have come together to present poetry through the fascinating medium called cinema. Other directors from ‘Bioscope’ are Viju Mane (Ek Hota Kau), Girish Mohite (Bail) and Gajendra Ahire (Dil-E-Nadan). ‘Golden Tree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd’ has brought these exciting names together to treat cinegoers with a unique cinematic feast.

Known for exploring different genres with every film, Viju Mane has attempted pure love story for the first time with his ‘Ek Hota Kau’. Based on a famous poem by Soumitra, it tells the story of a black and ugly boy deeply in love with a fair and beautiful girl. Through the story, Viju has also tried to tackle the problems faced by youth due to inferiority complex. It stars Spruha Joshi and Kushal Badrike in the lead. While the most revered saint Sant Dnyaneshwar’s composition has also found its way into the story, the music has been composed by the exciting new talent Soham Pathak.

After a social satire called ‘Bhartiy’, Girish Mohite has again tackled a social theme in his ‘Bail’. Based on a poem of the same name by illustrious poet Loknath Yashvant, the story reflects upon the widening gap between Bharat and India through a relationship between a farmer and his ox. Starring screen award winner Mangesh Desai, Smita Tambe, Sagar Karande and Uday Sabnis, the music has been composed by dynamic duo Avinash-Vishwajeet.
