At first, we saw him hosting television shows & web shows & now he is all set to make his debut as a film director with ‘Wedding Cha Shinema‘.

‘Wedding Cha Shinema’ is a multi-starrer magnum opus by Salil Kulkarni where he explores the whole fun-filled Maharashtrian wedding scenario through the idea of a documentary being made on the lives of the bride & groom. Starring Rucha Inamdar & Shivraj Waichal as the bride & the groom & a brigade of stars from Mukta Barve, Shivaji Satam, Bhau Kadam, Pravin Tarde, Alka Kubal, Sunil Barve, Ashwini Kalsekar & Sankarshan Karhade in important roles!

The trailer of the film truly gives vibes of a ‘Rajashri style’ family entertainer but with a Marathi flavor. Quick Viewpoint: ‘Nashibvaan’ is a film that loses it’s a charm because of not being clear about what it wants to be & where it wants to belong? It starts like a non-commercial festival suited film but later throughout feels more in the commercial zone, in both types it succeeds to average extent.

What Works? 

• Bhau Kadam! For the major part of the film! He plays a man who starts off being the usual innocent Bhau we are familiar with but later he has been presented in grey shades in a non-judgemental way, where his evolution over the course of time (however there’s a big issue with ‘the course of time’) does feel believable! In fact, almost every character in the film can be looked as grey characters.
• The first half of the film even after being slightly repetitive manages to keep us invested completely. The refreshing aspect here is how ‘Nashibvaan’ has portrayed poverty! It isn’t melodramatic as it is mostly seen in other recent Marathi films.
• The film isn’t bothered to give a moral lecture about anything. Though it also means the film had to work harder on what exactly it wishes to say.

What Fails? 

• ‘The course of time’ has a major logical issue. Though the change of Bhau’s character is believable the period in which it happens doesn’t make sense. Beyond his character, even the transition that takes place in his house & their family’s lifestyle in so much less time just doesn’t make sense. The time period is the issue (it is of about three weeks, where it could have been of at least 6 months) not the plot point that changes their life!
• Bhau Kadam being the principal protagonist of the film, doesn’t get any defining moment by the end of the film. It feels the film only uses him for the sake of the plot & then leaves him with its consequences without making a definite closure for him in terms of what it wishes to say through the consequences.
• As said about Bhau’s lack of closure, the overall film too lacks the same. It’s not compulsory for every film to say anything specific but then those films are throughout constructed in the same way. ‘Nashibvaan’ is never an escapist or artistically dominant film, it is about the humans it deals with & hence a definite conclusion was essential.
• The film could have been much more sharply edited! At many occasions, scenes are repetitive & don’t contribute in taking the narrative forward. In fact, even within the scenes, there are countless shots that make us wonder why are they there? Maybe the filmmaker wished to capture the realism of that scenario but then as said earlier it is inconsistent in being a festival suited film.
• While Bhau Kadam’s performance might not be different from his usual style of acting, it works well. But Mithali Jagtap who is a National award-winning actress ends up giving an inconsistent performance. In her loud emotional outbursts she feels to be very typical & fake but in the silent moments, she is effective.

Final Verdict: Amol Gole has been around as a cinematographer & even as a producer for a while, so certainly there were expectations from this film. But ‘Nashibvaan‘ doesn’t quite reward us in a way it could have, had it been more specific & confident about the things it wanted to say.

Very few honest actors work hard for their roles to such extent that it becomes effective on the screen. One such example is Bhau Kadam’s efforts for his upcoming film ‘Nashibvaan’. Bhau plays the roles of a sweeper in this film. To put life into the character Bhau in real picked up waste & cleaned just like a real sweeper!

The director of the film Amol Gole, didn’t want any adjustments & hence he made Bhau clean the actual garbage that a sweeper cleans. Bhau even cleaned public toilets! The majority of this film has been shot in Mulund, Mumbai.

Bhau Kadam says, “While playing this role I understood all the problems that sweepers & cleaners face. The diseases they tackle, the way society treats them & all of that. I started hating myself for all of this! Because it’s for us that these sweepers pick up garbage & keep our city clean. They do great work! They are real heroes for me! And now I have immense respect from them from the bottom of my heart.”

Bhau Kadam starrer ‘Nashibvaan’ is all set for the release. Vidhi Kasliwal of ‘Landmarc Films’ is presenting the film. Directed by cinematographer turned director Amol Vasant Gole, the first song of the film was recently revealed online! And since then the song has gone viral. Sung by popular singer Anand Shinde & also starring him in the video of the film.

The song has been penned by Shivkumar Dhale & the dance choreography has been done by Vitthal Patil. The unique thing about the song is that this song has been shot in a real dance bar. The bar was available for the shooting only for 1 day & the ‘Nashibvaan’ team had to shoot the song in that 1 day itself.

After entertaining the audiences through mediums like theatre, TV & films, Maharashtra’s favorite comic star ‘Bhalchandra Kadam’ aka ‘Bhau Kadam’ is all set to explore the new medium of web series! Bhau Kadam will be seen in & as ‘Lift Man’ in Zee 5’s new web series & the episodes of the series are already out on the streaming platform. On this occasion, we had an exclusive chat with Bhau Kadam!

The idea of creating an entire web series on the character of a ‘Lift Man’ as a lead is very unique! Usually, such characters are less important. How did you react to this?

Yes, it’s true! I found it very unique too. Zee 5 needs to be given the credit for it. I too thought what would a liftman do in his daily routine? One aspect of it is talking to people. I thought the people he meets would they be celebrities? But in fact, in the series, he meets common people who come to that building for their work. Now every person has his own style & subject & his/her give & take with the ‘Lift Man’ can create entertainment!

Now you have worked in all mediums of entertainment! From TV, theatre, films to now ‘Web’. How was the process in this medium different?

The process is very similar. The episode lengths are different. Every episode is around 10 minutes long. But through this medium, you reach the audiences quickly! One can become a star overnight thanks to this medium! But along with that, you can also say what really want to say through this medium. And we as actors are also a medium to say those things. And we can reach the audiences quickly with their issues as well.

We have heard from actors of yesteryears that in olden times comic actors were asked to improvise more often, without a script! They were expected to create comedy on their own! How has it changed now? Are there more talented writers now than they used to be before?

Once I asked Mama (Ashok Saraf) about a famous scene from his film ‘Pandu Hawaldar’. Whenever I saw the film I always thought that the scene was improvised by Mama himself. But Mama told me that the scene was in the script itself! So yes there were talented comic writers before too. I rather feel some new people today don’t really understand how to create comedy. They cast some actor to expect him to do comedy. But not everyone is like that!

Do you think the medium of ‘Web’ is the future of entertainment?

Yes, I believe this won’t stop now! It’s only going to get bigger. I think this medium will evolve with time. Just like in cricket we first had ‘Test cricket’ & now we have ‘T20’ but at the same time, we also have test cricket. So different forms of web content will evolve and all of them will have audiences. Moreover, in today’s world, the everyday traveling has become very time-consuming. People are consuming more & more content through mobile at this time.

Do you think a comic actor has a social responsibility? Sometimes humor might offend certain parts of our society. Are you conscious about it?

Yes yes, we have to be conscious all the time. Even when we do skits for ‘Chala Hawa Yeu Dya’ every now & then we edit a line because we think it is risky. Unnecessarily people would misinterpret it. Moreover, humor can have an offensive effect. And one can always do comedy without offending anyone!

There are two kinds of actors; one who is very spontaneous & other who are very serious & rehearse before they actually do a scene. What kind of an actor are you?

Primarily I belong to the first kind. I love to be spontaneous with my co-actors. But while being spontaneous an actor shouldn’t miss the basic essence of the script. Some actors keep doing their own thing & miss the point. And the other actor (co-actor) suffers because of it. I think since the time is specific for specific mediums, one should hit the punches rightly in the given time.

You have received lots of love from the audiences. How has that affected you in your personal life & has it given you emotional satisfaction?

I remember when I used to do theatre, I always wished people knew me more & loved me. Now they do! But at the same time, I also make it a point that I don’t let myself flow with it. Nowadays I quickly understand if I see a person from a distance who wishes to click a selfie with me. I try avoiding that because people are more interested in clicking selfies & showing it to other people rather than meeting & talking to me! I am right in front of you talk to me, ask me what you want & keep it with you as a memory! But when people come & see my plays I do click selfies with them. I think in that scenario it is my responsibility.
