Marathi cinema has come a long way from the last decade. Not only is there a rise in the quality of the films, a few of them have also managed to have a great run in the theatres. Here’s an attempt to look at the most successful Marathi films in terms of gross collections at the box office.

Timepass 2

Ravi Jadav is a star director of marathi cinema. He has only given superhits to the marathi film industry. Natrang, Balak Palak, Timepass all were huge hits. But the sequel to Timepass was a bigger hit than all the previously mentioned films. The film rode on the popularity of the first film. It supposedly earned close to Rs. 35 crore at the box office.

Lai Bhaari

Ritiesh Deshmukh debuted in the marathi film industry with a bang. Directed by Nishikant Kamat, Lai Bhaari was an instant hit. It used all the tropes of usual commercial Indian cinema and came up with a winner of a film. The music by Ajay-Atul was also popular. Lai Bhaari also earned close to Rs. 40 crores at the box office, but supposedly a little less than Katyar.

Katyar Kaljaat Ghusli

Again an adaptation of a classic Sangeet Natak, this film that released in 2015 had enthralled one and all. The delectable classical music and the solid story was a winning combination. Great performances by Sachin Pilgaonkar and Subodh Bhave further lend the film the much needed push at the box office. Produced by Zee studios, this film also approximately earned close to Rs. 40 crores at the box office, but supposedly a little less than Natsamrat which also earned from shows in US and other countries.

Natsamrat

The Nana Patekar starrer melodrama adapted from a seminal play by the created a furor at the box office at the beginning of the year. The story of a retired thespian being ill-treated by his own children touched the heart of Maharashtra. Nana Patekar gave one of his best ever performances and impressed one and all. Produced by Great Marathi Entertaiment, Fincraft Media and Gajanan Chitra and distributed by Zee, Natsamrat was till a few months back the highest grossing Marathi film with a collection of approx. Rs. 40 crores.

Sairat

Even two weeks into its release, Sairat still has the whole of Maharashtra under its spell. People are still queuing up outside cinema halls in every nook and corner of the state. Within 2 weeks itself it has broken the all-time record of a marathi film’s collection at the box office. The epic love story with a tragic end has struck a chord with the classes as well as the masses of Maharashtra. Ajay-Atul’s music is superhit! sairat has the rare distinction of being the film that has won over the critics and the audiences alike. It has grossed Rs. 41 crore till now and the numbers are still pretty much steady. Most trade analysts are not counting off Sairat crossing the Rs. 60 crore mark, with the Rs. 50 crore mark well in sight. This is a massive jump from the second highest grosser of Rs. 40 crore. This shows that the film is working due to its content and not only due to the massive promotions by Zee.

Priya Bapat is a leading name in Marathi entertainment industry having worked in acclaimed plays like ‘Nava gadi Nava Rajya’ AND films like ‘Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy’ and Happy Journey‘ and she recently had a box office winner like ”Time Pass 2’. We spoke to Priya about life after Time Pass 2 and this is what she told us.

How does it feel to have a super hit like TIMEPASS 2?

Of course, it feels really great to be a part of this movie. It was my 1st film which was blockbuster success. The movie has changed myidentity to Praju, the character I played in the movie. After the movie, people have started calling me Praju and not Priya which feels exuberant.

You received a state award as best actress for Happy Journey? Was it satisfying?

Yes, Happy Journey is close to my heart. The film taught me a lot of things such as journey behind process of film making. I learnt the important things about cinema like various color palates, studied character, multiple workshops etc. It has been and always will be the closest movie that I can associate myself with.

Any projects in Hindi?

Ans. Nothing so far.

Any TV Shows on the anvil?

Ans. Nothing concrete at the moment.

Are you keen on theater?

I would love to do theatre if offered an interesting script. Currently, I am focusing on my next film with Sachin Kundalkar, director of my HAPPY JOURNEY.

When can we see you and hubby Umesh together in a film?

We are reading a lot of scripts but we haven’t found anything interesting that Umesh and I would want to appear together on the silver screen.

Your favorite actors or role models?

Ans. I draw my inspiration with not a particular person but many. I look around me and get inspired by every person I can learn something from.

The directors on your wish list?

Ans. Rajkumar Hirani and Gauri Shinde are on my dream list and I would love to work with them one day.

Review:

Director Ravi Jadhav’s Marathi movie TimePass 2 treads on the same path as TimePass. The film is high on humor but not so high on content. In taking forward the love story of Dagadu and Prajakta, the makers have resorted to not only age-old clichés but also unconvincing factors. But there is enough entertainment for the target audience to savor this dish once.

The story of Dagadu and Praju takes a leap. Dagadu is now 30 years old and unmarried. He still dreams of Prajakta (or Parajakta), although it has been a long time since she left him. She has settled in Konkan with her father aka Shakaal (Vaibhav Mangale) after leaving Mumbai. Prajakta’s father is eager to marry her off with a well-cultured guy.

Meanwhile, Dagadu’s crazy friends encourage him to meet Prajakta, express his love for her and get married to her. Hence, he along with his friends goes on a mission to Konkan. But does Prajakta still love him? What about Shakaal who hates Dagadu to the core?

The USP of TimePass 2 is its humor. But while the comic moments in the first film were born out of Dagadu’s adolescent antics and cute obsession, here the onus is on crazy, whacky and slapstick situational comedy in plenty of doses, which keeps you entertained throughout. Although at times it appears forceful and silly, it goes with the genre.

But the problem areas are big, which cannot be ignored. The basic plot itself is questionable. Why did Dagadu wait till the age of 30 to search for Prajakta? Why didn’t the couple be in touch all these years through various technological means? Also, the twist about the secret profession of a character is completely unconvincing. The film also derails from the main aim post interval and ends on a clichéd, tried and tested manner.

From Chinar and Mahesh’ music, the song ‘Praju’ stands out. The rest of the songs fall in the ‘not bad’ or ‘decent’ category. ‘Madan Pichkari’ doesn’t go well with the family movie genre. Vasudeo Rane’s camerawork captures the beautiful Konkan in a simple and subtle manner. The background score is as per the need. The jingle ‘Insaniyat Ke Dushman’ should have been used more though.

Priyadarshan Jadhav carries the difficult task of playing the grown up Dagadu with confidence, although he overdoes on a few occasions. Priya Bapat once again provides a convincing and likeable performance. Vaibhav Mangle was remarkable in the first film. He goes few notches higher here by being convincing during both comical and emotional moments.

It is heartwarming to see Prathamesh Parab entering the scene every now and then, displaying his typical crowd-pleasing behavior. The same can be said about Ketaki Mategaonkar although she doesn’t get to speak much. Sandip Pathak and two other actors playing Dagadu’s friends are decent while Bhalchandra Kadam, as Dagadu’s father, is effective once again.

Overall:

TimePass 2 is a one-time watch entertainer. The brand value and some tremendous hype will make sure that the film will break box office records.

After a glimpse of the grown up Praju, the fans are thoroughly captivated by Priya’s new look in the song “Tu mila”. The diva has mesmerized her fans in this song with her stunning looks. The famous Marathi actress is known for her unique style statements in her movies and has yet again made heads turn with her new avatar.

Sharing the experience while shooting the song Priya said, “I was so thrilled for this song because the look was very glamorous and different from my past movies. Shooting this song was just like a dream for me as I have done many things for the first time in this song. For example I have never danced with my co-star on the beach. Honestly from set of clothes, gestures to body language and shooting at exquisite locations, I enjoyed every bit of it.”She added.

Talking about the song the diva also added, “The music of the song is very melodious and touched my heart. I just cannot get over this track and keep humming the song. It is one of my favorite songs from the movie and I love playing and listening to this song whenever I get an opportunity”

The music is composed by Chinar and Mahesh and sung by Nikhil D’souza & Shalmali Kholgade. Timepass 2 will hit theaters on May 1, 2015.

There is a lot of buzz about ‘TIMEPASS-2’.

Yes. The original was a super duper hit and everyone is anticipating about it’s sequel and I am proud to be a part of the film.

What has changed in the sequel?

The lead protagonists played by Prathmesh Parab and Ketaki Mategonkar have grown up are now matured and I play Ketaki’s older version and Priyadarshan Jadhav is cast opposite me in the main lead.

How was it like working on the film?

Priyadarshan is someone I have known for a long time having worked in a very successful play with him which ran for more than a year and so There was a comfort level between us and we had a blast while shooting for the film. Director Ravi Jadhav is also an old friend of mine since my modelling days when Ravi was an ad filmmaker and had shot his first few commercials with me and so I was very comfortable with Ravi and the shoot went off quite nicely.

Recently your performance in ‘Happy Journey’ was very much appreciated? Is there a sequel in the offing?

Not that I know of.

You and hubby Umesh Kamat are rarely seen together in films. Is it deliberate on your part?

Nothing like that. It’s just that we have not got any offers together.

Are you open to television offers?

Yes, Why not? I have just completed a travel show for ETV MARATHI.

What are your forthcoming films?

I have a few good Marathi and Hindi offers but I wouldn’t like to talk about them now.

Timepass 2 is a sequel of most popular movie Timepass (2014). Priya is very excited for her role in the movie as Praju is very connected to her heart.

Speaking about her character in the movie Priya said, “I am extremely happy to play Praju. My reel character is different to my real personality and that made me happy to play the Praju. I believe the audience will shower love for Praju once again, as they did in Timepass.”

Speaking about her fans in Pune she added, “I am always happy when I am in Pune. It feels like coming back to home as I always get warm welcoming from my fans here.”
