Review: Mulshi Pattern (2018)
Cast: Om Bhutkar, Mohan Joshi, Upendra Limaye, Kshitish Date, Savita Malpekar, Mahesh Manjrekar & Pravin Tarde
Director: Pravin Tarde

Quick Viewpoint: The Gangster film genre isn’t explored that often in Marathi cinema. ‘Mulshi Pattern’ succeeds in getting quite a few traits of this genre right, especially the film has an everlasting emotional impact!

What Fails?

  • The non-linear pattern of the film seems forceful & unnecessary. And while using this pattern the film jumps through the narrative every now & then. The film misses many narrative transitions, & distillates many peak points in the narrative casually.
  • The film is in too much love with its characters. The whole narrative at many instances feels like manipulated for the convenience of increasing a character’s impact.
  • While using many known traits of the ‘gangster’ genre it doesn’t discover any new possibilities on its own. While the social backdrop of farmers selling their lands is used well & has an emotional impact it doesn’t change the actual ‘gangster’ narrative of the film which lacks freshness.
  • While the film is technically smooth. It could have been more rustic in the way in capturing action scenes. For example, too much use of slow motion spoils the impact of a chase scene!
  • There’s a track of a teenage boy in the film who is closer to the hero (gangster) of the film played by Om Bhutkar. This whole track seems to be ripped off from another gangster film, a Hindi film named ‘Allah Ke Bandey’ starring Sherman Joshi in lead.

What Works?

  • The film has many elaborate scenes that are specifically designed to create an emotional impact on the audiences. There’s a gimmicky staginess in it. Though in a harmless way! In fact, those moments stay in our memory for a long time after the film is over!
  • Om Bhutkar’s performance is one of the year’s finest & the most emotionally effective performance in Marathi of recent times! For the first time, he got the opportunity to shine in a full-fledged lead role in a well marketed commercial film & he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
  • The chemistry between Om Bhutkar & Mohan Joshi, who plays his father, the role of an old man who is facing the consequences of the actions he once took (of selling the land).
  • In fact, the father-son bond works really well in the film, that too in both perspectives; of the son & of the father.
  • The dialogues of the film might not become iconic straight away iconic but they are certainly effective & suit the genre of the film & in keeping the audience’s interest throughout.
  • There’s a legit audience for this kind of violent gangster films, but very few such films are made in Marathi. ‘Mulshi Pattern’ took it forward from where Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘Lalbaug Parel’ & Abhijeet Panse’s ‘Rege’ left few years ago!

Final Verdict: ‘Mulshi Pattern’ is a must watch for the audiences who enjoy gangster films & it also gives an emotional impact that might work for any kind of audiences.

Rating: 3/5

Cast: Ashok Saraf, Dilip Prabhawalkar, Shivaji Satam, Vikram Gokhale, Satish Alekar, Santosh Juvekar, Sharad Ponkshe, Uday Tikekar, Manjiri Phadnis & Deepti Lele

Director: Mahesh Manjrekar

Quick Viewpoint: The trailer, teaser & posters of ‘Mi Shivaji Park’ sell a completely different film! It feels like a deep intellectual drama that eventually turns out to be a poorly structured revenge drama with a forceful social context to it.

What Works?

  • The theme. Though nothing new in it & having similarities to Manjrekar’s own ‘Virrudh’ (the Amitabh Bachchan starrer) it still somehow is very relatable to the audiences.
  • Further rendition of the basic theme, the conceptual idea of retired old men recreating a version of a court case on their own.
  • It’s just satisfying to watch stalwarts like Ashok Saraf, Dilip Prabhawalkar, Vikram Gokhale & others share screen together. Though Dilip Prabhawalkar stands out as he doesn’t miss a single beat in his performance like always!

What Fails?

  • The starting conflict that initiates the narrative is so loosely set up that the there is no emotional relativity for the audiences towards the principal characters of the film.
  • Absolutely horrendous silly mistakes in the detailing of the film. For e.g: In a flashback sequence set in either late 90s or early 2000s we see characters using smart phones!
  • Tonnes of logical errors caused due to convenient twists & turns given to the narrative.
  • The film ridicules Gandhism by unnecessarily connecting it to situations that doesn’t really have anything to do with it! For eg: a dialogue says how Gandhi followers who later became politicians resorted to violence against public agitations. The whole idea of a governing body & it’s defence is not a by product of Gandhism, it need not be associated with it.
  • By the climax the film becomes a complete circus that jumbles up the whole socio-political message it wanted to endorse. You leave the theatre being clueless about what exactly did the film wanted to say?

Final Verdict: ‘Mi Shivaji Park’ suffers from serious lack of inspiration in saying something new or creating something of it’s own. It seems to just be a vehicle for the hugely respected star cast to come together.

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti the trailer of upcoming Marathi film ‘Me Shivaji Park‘ was posted on the Internet! It isn’t a coincidence that the trailer is released on Gandhi Jayanti! The trailer effectively presents a debate on values & principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Can those values be useful in today’s world! Are ‘Truth’ & ‘Non-violence’ still powerful weapons to fight injustice?

Different characters in the film portrayed by acting heavyweights like Ashok Saraf, Dilip Prabhawalkar, Vikram Gokhale, Shivaji Satam & Satish Alekar represent the angst of the middle class against the injustice around. The trailer of the film suggests that these retired old men decide to change things on their own, & for that they probably resort to violence. Is this the right way? Dilip Prabhawalkar’s character who is a Gandhi follower says he might even stand against his friends if he had too!

This conflict between two opposite value systems & the solid star cast of the film promises that ‘Me Shivaji Park’ is a must watch film! Moreover the film is directed by Mahesh Manjrekar! After a long time in Marathi cinema we are seeing a strong social thriller! It also has the backdrop of political ideologies of our country! ‘Me Shivaji Park‘ hits theatres on 18th October!

Shikari Movie Review:

Marathi cinema in the 70s & 80s went through the most ‘commercially’ successful phase because of a single man ‘Dada Kondke’. We’ve grown up hearing his legendary tales of how the great Raj Kapoor used to make sure if there isn’t a Dada Kondke movie in theatres before releasing his films. There was a distinct ‘double meaning’ humour that he introduced us to & made it work for a audience that were only interested in having a good time in theatres especially in the rural parts. Since then whenever anyone has tried a hand at this kind of humour has failed miserably or has been easily discarded as cheap ‘b’ or ‘c’ grade stuff. Even there has never been the same response from the audiences.

Viju Mane directorial ‘Shikari’ proudly promoted itself as a film that endorses the same ‘Kondke’ brand of humour. The truth is Shikari’s humour doesn’t really belong to the same brand, in fact it doesn’t even belong to any brand of humour. A few adult jokes here & there, some slapstick humour here & there (which doesn’t work) but the film is more of an erotica especially in the first half. An erotica that is so deliberately designed which doesn’t have any logical backbone of it’s own! While doing so it makes a fool of an aspiring actress played by Neha Khan. Her character of ‘Savita’ has been exploited in the story of the film by opportunist men. Sadly her character in the scheme of things of the actual film too has been exploited. How dumb can her character be? She never understands if a man is lusting for her!

But then the other characters of her husband (Prasad Oak), Phulwa (Mrunmayee Deshpande) too are equally dumb. Whereas Suvrat Joshi, Bharat Ganeshpure & Siddharth Jadhav play opportunist men who only care about lust, this is the entire range of the characters in the film. The other supporting characters played by Bhau Kadam, Vaibhav Mangle & Kashmera Shah are completely irrelevant to the film. Again Kashmera Shah has been unnecessarily exploited as an object of ‘lust’.

There are two films that are mixed up together here. One is a straightforward copy of the 80s Hindi film ‘Anubhav’ that starred Padmini Kolhapure & Shekhar Suman. A childish girl who doesn’t understand a bit about post marital proceedings between a husband & wife (though here, one fine day just one watch of an adult film all of a sudden makes her matured!). The other film is about ‘casting couch’ in the film industry. And the ‘Shikari’ is a metaphor for all lustful men! The irony is that the first half feels targeted towards these exact Shikaris among the audiences. While the second part of the film has mindlessly dumbed-down Savita’s character to make her a victim to give us a message.

Neha Khan though thoroughly exploited in the plot of the film & in the actual film is a really effective actress. We hope she finds good films. Mrunmayee Deshpande usually entertaining to watch is ineffective here. Suvrat Joshi is good in his part but that doesn’t save the film in any way. ‘Shikari’ is a crude film that is supposedly about the exploitation of women in today’s world but ironically ends up exploiting the female cast of the film! The makers believed it’s a commercial film & not for an intellectual audiences. If it ends up becoming a super-hit, that would surely say a lot about today’s society of our’s with countless Shikaris roaming free.

Overall:

‘Shikari’ could entertain only those who watch films to satisfy their lustful urges, for the rest this film will only end up being highly offensive as it was for me.

Once upon a time during the reign of Marathi’s biggest blockbuster star Dada Kondake double meaning erotic comedy was a norm! And all that happened in the mainstream of Marathi cinema. However after that this genre could only be associated with b grade films in Marathi or even in Hindi.

But now Viju Mane directorial ‘Shikari’ a film presented by Mahesh Manjrekar is making this brave attempt. The trailer reminds us of an old Hindi film ‘Anubhav’ in one way. ‘Anubhav’ starred Shekhar Suman & Padmini Kolhapure in the lead. The track of a childish girl (played by Mrunmayee Deshpande) getting married to the hero (Suvrat Joshi) of the film & then the hero looks elsewhere (Neha Khan) to satisfy his needs is pretty much common with ‘Anubhav’.

However the other track of ‘Shikari’ one that is connected with the film industry looks completely new! The makers of the film also said that ‘Shikari’ is a term that represents the mentality of many powerful men in the industry who hunt their prey. These preys could be any young artists that are looking for opportunities. It would be interesting to see how ‘Shikari’ manages to mix together these two different subjects together while also entertaining the audience.
