Purushottam Berde, a name known for his various plays will be debuting on the small screen as a producer. His first serial “Ga Sahajani” will start on 10 October on Star Pravah.

Review:

The police are undoubtedly one of the most overworked public servants in the state. They do not have any fixed duty hours; they are underpaid; and the housing colonies in which they live are crumbling structures. Police Line (a term used for colonies that house police) directed by Raju Parsekar attempts throws some light on the issues faced by the constables of the police.

The screenplay here just peeks into the life of a number of character living in a housing colony of the police and tries to portray all their trials and tribulations. It lacks any sort of a plot. Though a lack of plot isn’t necessarily a recipe for disaster, but the characters here are poorly sketched and a little too many for our liking. Throughout the whole first half we are just introduced to these characters and almost nothing significant of any sort happens in the film. The first half is a serious test of our patience. The proceedings are so drab that I was finding difficult to not doze off. The treatment is very marathi tv like, full of melodrama and very poor acting.

There isn’t exactly a lead character here, but Bala played by Santosh Juvekar has been given the most screen time. He is the son of a retired police constable who is an upright gentleman, proud of the honesty with which he has performed his duty of a policeman. His married elder son, who has also joined the police, doesn’t believe in his father’s ideals and blames them for his family’s misery. Bala is a studious young man who plans to become a software engineer.

There are a number of other such families living in the same housing colony that the film sheds light on, but not even a single one of their stories holds our attention. The filmmaking is very outdated and bland. The setting is based in the 90s for the most part and it also feels that the film too was made in the 90s. There are numerous cringe-worthy scenes that had me squirming in my seat. Another aspect that works completely against the film is the preachy tone. Right from the voice over in the beginning the preaching begins and doesn’t end till the end credits stop rolling. Some characters just go on and on about the miseries of a police constable.

In a well-intentioned film like Police Line, I always make that extra effort to find something positive. But, unfortunately, apart from the noble intentions I couldn’t find anything even remotely worthy of any praise. The policemen, much like the policies of the government, have here been given a raw deal; they deserved hell of a lot better.

Overall:

A well-intentioned film, but drab and preachy.

Review:

Marathi cinema has had a history of what are known as ‘cheap comedies’. From the legendary Dada Kondke films to the very popular Ashok Saraf-Laxmikant Berde films, there has always been an audience for crass slapstick humour in Maharashtra. Though, unlike the 90s, there is certainly a decline in the domination of such films in the last decade or so. But there still definitely is an audience for such a brand of cinema. Bai Go Bai is targeted towards that audience.

The start of the film, though expectedly over the top, does promise a somewhat different plot for what is basically a loud slapstick comedy. Baayjoakka (Nirmitee Sawant) rules the village like her own fiefdom. She holds a grudge against all men. Moustaches are not allowed to be grown; chores are the responsibility of the men only; husband and wife do not sleep in the same room. Gender stereotypes are reversed and it seems the screenplay plans to exploit some humour from this rather misandrist setting.

It does tread along this path for a while, but, soon enough, predictably creeps in – Baayjoakka, a widower, has a young and beautiful daughter and, even more predictably, she falls in love with a young man despite her misandrist upbringing. The two then go on to out-wit Baayjoakka and douse the raging flame of hatred for men in her.

Frankly, I found it very difficult to sit through this film. There was hardly a moment I wasn’t squirming in my seat. There were just one or two moments I caught myself chuckling, other times the loud and crass humour was testing my nerves. I couldn’t help wondering whether these kinds of films still work.

The acting was quite mediocre all over. Nirmitee Sawant, as the matriarch, does look the part but her miniscule role makes little difference. It would have made the film a tad bearable only if the lead actors were any good. But that isn’t the case either. Nayan Jadhav, as the boy who wins Baayjoakka’s daughter’s heart, at least has a breezy screen presence. But Sheetal Pathak as the daughter just cannot act. Vijay Patkar is up to his usual antics that have never amused me.

Quite irritatingly, there is absolutely nothing in this film that works. The romance is silly and the plan to out-smart Bayjooakka is even sillier. The screenwriter does seem to think quite lowly of his audience to have come up with this nonsense. He can also be held insensitive for trivialization of an issue as serious as child molestation. Lesser said about the music the better.

Overall :

Bai Go Bai is a typical cheap comedy that has absolutely nothing working for it. Despite promising a somewhat fresh setting it soon slips into a predictable plot. The screenplay is silly and also trivializes the serious issue of child molestation.
