‘Khichik‘ releasing on 20th September stars Prathamesh Parab, Siddharth Jadhav, Rasika Chavan, Paula L McGlynn and other artists! The film seems like a heartfelt story of people migrating from rural to urban parts! On this occasion we catched up with Prathamesh Parab and asked him about his experience of being a part of ‘Khichik’!

You don’t seem to particularly choose lead roles in your films! But still there’s something unique about the characters you play. Is it the same in ‘Khichik’?

Yes, in this film too I play a very unique character. I haven’t played a road romeo who is also a thief before! This film too is very unique. When I first heard the narration I was attracted to this character because he seemed like a boy you can easily identify with and can find anywhere on the street! In real life when we see such characters we feel we should stay away from them! And the look given to my character too is very unique!

How is the character important in the film?

Even if lengthwise it isn’t much a bigger character. But in the second half my character is important to the story. But what I felt the reason this film is important is because it brings together many genres together. The film is set in Vidarbha as well as Pune. So that also brings in different flavors of the regions along with different music, different actors in different looks! Hence it’s a very rare feat for a film to bring together all this variety together in one film.

As you are saying there are many different tracks in the film, what is the one thing that binds all these tracks together? 

The character of ‘Fatfati’ is that one thing that binds everyone together. The small kid who is the actual lead of the film and along with him the character of ‘Aaba’. How they bring all these characters together could be explored in the film itself!

Will you be seen romancing in this film? As your fans love you seeing you do that!

The character that I play does like a girl from his heart, but he is not good at wooing girls, neither does he stalk girls! But primarily my character is of a thief! So maybe audiences would be see me playing a completely new character in this film!

The song is an emotional ride throughout. Especially now when the whole country is facing a huge problem of floods and rehabilitation the songs is even more relatable to everyone. The song captures the journey of a family leaving their village and searching for shelter. Cities are known to give shelter to many homeless people but the struggle isn’t easy.

The heart touching lyrics of the song are penned by Datta Gunjal, the music is composed by Abhishek – Datta and the song is sung by Savani Kulkarni. The song intrigues us about the film and what exactly will it be about!

Ever since the success of ‘Timepass’ Prathamesh Parab has been stereotyped in many typical teenage romances. Sometimes these films are comedies and sometimes they are more dramatic. The teaser of yet another such love story starring Prathamesh Parab is out titled ‘Khichik‘.

While there’s a subtle change here than the previous roles of Prathamesh Parab, he sports a French beard in ‘Khichik’! The actor seemed to be blessed by a forever teenager looking appearance but he is showing variety within it now. The teaser of the film suggests this will be a dramatic love story and we guess that this matured look of Prathamesh would compliment the story.

Prathamesh Parab has a huge following among the masses and his recent hit ‘Takatak‘ has only made it clear one more time. But will the audience be entertained by something out of the box from ‘Khichik’ is to be seen when the film hits theatres.

‘Takatak‘ is an upcoming Marathi film set to release on 28th of June & the film stars Prathamesh Parab in yet another teenage lover boy role & a couple of other young actors who have been seen in some films in the recent past. The trailer of the film has got tremendous response from the audience though both positive & negative.

From the trailer one can identify two parallel tracks in the film, one with Prathamesh Parab which seems very similar to whatever work he has done before.  The other track is of the other couple, a newly married couple where the young husband is shown exaggeratedly horny & the girl decides to teach him a lessor of sorts.

There’s nothing wrong for a film to belong to the adult comedy or erotica genre, but the way this films seems to exploit the genre seems very cheap & downright disgusting. The humour is not really humorous but it’s crass & boring. Marathi cinema’s image outside our world has been really good in the recent years, our films might lack in technical & commercial aspects but at least our films are respected for the boldness of our subjects. This supposedly “Boldest Marathi Film Everrrr!!!” is instead an altogether new low for Marathi cinema.

Ziprya Review (Marathi Movie):

Based on a novel of an acclaimed Marathi writer ‘Arun Sadhu’, ‘Ziprya’ is a film that manages to only give little glimpses of the actual world the story was set in. Firstly the film has no understanding of a cinematic structure in the screenplay. It feels abrupt from the beginning & ends on even more abrupt note.

There’s something inherently connectable about films that manage to capture the essence of Mumbai’s actual heart. It all started with one of the finest films ever made anywhere, Mira Nair’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ to the recent Rajnikant epic ‘Kaala’ & many films in between. But then by default these films don’t become great just because of the subject! There’s a whole lot of expertise required to be perfected especially in this genre.

One of it is acting. Acting is not just connected to the talent of an actor but also to the choices they make along with the director, the choice of casting & finally the overall effect of all of it on the backdrop of the film. There’s just not enough coherence here in the overall effect. Amruta Subhash as ‘Leela’ looks a straight miscast playing the elder sister of ‘Ziprya’. Some scenes seem so serial-like & never remind us of the harsher reality on which they are based.

The original novel was published in 1990 but was set in the late 70s to early 80s. Now this film is clearly set in today’s times. But still we see a Amitabh Bachchan fanboy (Aslam played by Prathamesh Parab) reciting dialogues from ‘Deewar’ (1975). While on the other hand he also mentions Salman Khan! None of the main characters behave like they belong in today’s times. We see the kids selling mobile covers, but we never see them using a mobile!

Ziprya (Chinmay Kambli) and his boot polish gang do not create any emotional connection with the audiences, mainly because they never seem like real characters. The background score & the songs don’t help here, instead keep us even more distant from them. Still the only clear positive of the film is the locations where the film is shot. This is unfiltered Mumbai! If the makers managed to shoot at such real locations, more work on the script could have easily made ‘Ziprya’ an effective experience.

The performances in the film are not bad when looked individually but as said earlier the effect isn’t coherent in the context of the overall film. Prathamesh Parab’s ‘Aslam’ is made the centre of attention by the end of the film, for no real reason. Maybe the only logical explanation to this is that since Aslam was played by the most popular actor in the cast! Throughout it’s Parab’s performance that irritates us the most, we have seen him do the same thing so many times now!

Chinmay Kambli who plays Ziprya was earlier seen in the extremely effective feel good film about ‘farmer suicides’, ‘Jhing Chik Jhing’. He was very effective back then as a child artist, not now. Saksham Kulkarni’s performance is the only one that makes some impact on us, but sadly his character is left in between the film, & then suddenly brought back later.

It has been proved countless times before, that a highly relevant subject doesn’t process itself into a highly relevant film by default & it’s proved again. It needs better cinematic understanding & an approach to get precise performances from the cast.

Overall:

It’s an easier choice to make between ‘Ziprya’ the novel & ‘Ziprya’ the film for the audiences who really are excited by the idea & premise of this story.

In fact, the story has become even more relevant in today’s times, as the people living in slums & on the footpaths have only increased in number.

The film stars known faces like Amruta Subhash, Prathamesh Parab & Pravin Tarde along with other new actors too, who look convincing in their part. The film is set to release in theatres on 22^nd June in theatres all over Maharashtra. After a long time, we will see a film in theatres which showcases the reality of Mumbai & tells the story of the poor & the downtrodden.
