Story Outline :

In Kulpe village, youngsters Raghu (Amey Wagh), Mukund (Ketan Pawar) and Bala (Siddharth Menon) are the best of friends. Unfortunately, they are not able to make a name for themselves, despite each one possessing some skill. To make use of their various talents, they decide to make a movie.

At the same time, Aids awareness campaign is on full swing in their village. Hence, they choose Aids awareness as the topic of their film. As they lack a proper camera and shooting equipment, they include marriage video shooter Janardhan aka Janya (Atul Kulkarni) in their team. What starts off as a fun activity ends up being the most soul-stirring journey of their lives.

Review :

The year started with Ravi Jadhav presenting a serious social message in a lighthearted manner in BP (Balak Palak). Now, Satish Rajwade does the same in Popat. Although the topic explored in Popat is hugely different from the one explored in BP, the end result of both the films is the same. After Premachi Goshta, Rajwade has once again churned out a delightful saga, which also has a repeat value.

Like various rural flicks, the aim of the writer here is to make sure the audience connects with the characters, their missions and the location. This means that the film doesn’t follow a conventional storytelling method. But this doesn’t affect the audience in any manner whatsoever. In fact, it works very well as the writer succeeds in the aforementioned aim. The ever-present lighthearted and hilarious moments keep the entertainment quotient high.

But the bigger challenge for the creative think tank was to present an unusual yet important social issue. The creatively witty and yet powerful manner in which they succeed in their task make sure they deserve nothing short of an applause. The reason for this is that it is no mean task to enlighten, delight and entertain simultaneously. The climax deserves a special mention for it leaves you overwhelmed.

The only negative aspect that appears is the overall length of 154 minutes, which could have been shortened, especially in the first half. But this won’t trouble you much as the film never treads on a slow path.

The locations look enticing due to Bhaskar Samla’s cinematography. Music doesn’t have an important part to play but the tracks by Avinash Vishwajeet suit the needs. Thankfully, songs are used only when required. The background score too is impressive.

Atul Kulkarni shows his versatility and talent in his portrayal of Janya. His sudden switch from underplaying the character to acting loud is the best part of his brilliant act. Amey Wagh, Ketan Pawar and Siddharth Menon too play their parts exceedingly well. They are impressive in both humorous and serious moments. The unusual chemistry between the four is always visible. Anita Date, Neha Shitole and Megha Ghadge shine in supporting acts.

Overall :

Popat is yet another winner from Rajwade. The content has the potential of doing well at the box office. This parrot deserves to fly high!

“POPAT” brand new piece in the making, stars Atul Kulkarni, Amey Wagh,Siddharth Menon and Ketan Pawar along with Anita Date, Neha Shitcle and Megha Ghadge. The screenplay and dialogue is by Chinmay Kelkar and the story by Satish Rajwade. Bhaskar Samala is the director of photography with the music score by Avinash-Vishwajeet. The choreographer is Phulwa Khamkar,editing by Rajesh Rao and make-up by Santosh Gayake. Pallavi Rajwade has designed the costumes and the singers involved are Swapnil Bandodkar, Bela Shende, Prasanajeet and Maithilee Panes Joshi. Umesh Shinde is the executive producer.

It is sheer hard work and team effort that has made it possible to churn out another film in a span of 5 months which is ready for release. The very choosy and perfectionist Atul Kulkarni has for the first time featured in two back to back films in the same year with the same team in two drastically different looks and genere. दिग्दर्शक सतीश राजवाडे यांनी या चित्रपटाचे वर्णन अत्यंत समर्पक शब्दांत केले आहे. ’एक अतुलनीय, प्रेरणादायी, सर्जनशील आणि अत्यंत मनोरंजक अशी ही निर्मिती आहे. `पोपट’ काही तरी अविश्वसनीय असे प्रेक्षकांसमोर ठेवतो आणि त्याचे वर्णन करायला शब्द नाहीत. मी केवU शहरी विषयांना हात घालणारा शहरी कथाकार आहे, अशी छाप आतापर्यंत माझ्यावर होती. `पोपट’ हा ग्रमाण पार्श्वभूमीवर आकाराला येणारा आणि गावंढU बोलीभाषा असलेला माझा पहिला चित्रपट आहे. `पोपट’ हा विस्तारीत प्रेक्षकवर्गाला डोÈयांसमोर ठेवून आकाराला आला आहे. शहरी आणि ग्रामीण अशा दोन्ही प्रकारच्या प्रेक्षकांना तो आवडेल,“ असे ते म्हणतात. ’पोपट हा संपूर्णत: सर्जनशील निर्णय आहे आणि या विषयाला अनुसरून आवश्यक ती निरागसता आणि भेद्यता या चित्रपटात अधोरेखित केली गेली आहे. या चित्रपटातील गावंढळ वळणाची जी भाषा वापरली गेली आहे त्यात बराच गोडवा आहे आणि ती उभी करताना मला खूप मजा आली. ती प्रत्येकाशी अगदी सहजपणे जोडली जाते आणि मनोरंजनाची एक वेगळी शक्ती त्यात आहे. `पोपट’ या चित्रपटात जी कथा सांगितली गेली आहे, तिला उत्तम अशी पार्श्वभूमी आहे. एक कथाकार म्हणून मला एक वेगळा वनव्हास साकारणे गरजेचे वाटते आणि ही बाब मी नेहमीच पाUत आलो आहे. मिराह एन्टरटेन्मेंटने मला हे स्वातंत्र्य दिले त्याबद्दल कंपनीचा मी आभारी आहे, कारण शेवटी मनोरंजन करणे ही फार मोठी जबाबदारी असते,“ असेही राजवाडे यांनी पुढे म्हटले.

मिराह एन्टरटेन्मेंटच्या श्री अमित भानुशाली यांनी म्हटले की, ’कंपनीने आतापर्यंत अनेक हॉलीवूड चित्रपटांचे संपादन करून त्यांचे वितरण केले आहे. एमईपीएलने `मम्मी-थ्री’ आणि `पॅरानॉर्मल  अक्टीव्हीटी’ यांसारख्या चित्रपटांचे संपादन आणि वितरण केले आहे.त्याचबरोबर `फिराक’, `जेल’, `हेल्लो’, `8X10 तस्वीर’ आणि इतरही कित्येक चित्रपटांची सह-निर्मिती केली आहे. त्याशिवाय कंपनीने `हाऊसफुल’, `हाऊसफुल 2′, `दबंग’ आदी चित्रपटांचे वितरण केले आहे.“ जगभरातील चित्रपट प्रेक्षकांसाठी मिराह एन्टरटेन्मेंटने नेहमीच दर्जेदार मनोरंजन दिले आहे, असेही भानुशाली पुढे म्हणाले.

सतीश राजवाडे यांच्या `मुंबई-पुणे-मुंबई’ आणि `प्रेमाची गोष्ट’ या दोन रोमँटीक चित्रपटांना रोमँटीक बाजातील संगीत दिल्यानंतर
संगीत दिग्दर्शक अविनाश -विश्वजीत आता `पोपट’च्या चित्रपटाच्या माध्यमातून `रांगडा बाज’ मराठी प्रेक्षकांसमोर ठेवत आहेत.
आधीच्या दोन्ही चित्रपटांमधील रोमँटीक गाणी लोकप्रिय झाली आहेत आणि संगीत दिग्दर्शक जोडीचा हा `रांगडा बाज’ही रसिकांना
आवडेल असा विश्वास संगीत प्रकाशनाच्या वेळी व्यक्त केला गेला.

`पोपट’च्या रांगडया बाजातील संगीताचे प्रकाशन शनिवारी 10 ऑगस्ट 2013 रोजी ज्येष्ठ संगीतकार अशोक पत्की यांच्या
हस्ते झाले. शिवाजी पार्क येथील स्वातंत्र्यवीर सावरकर राष्ट्रीय स्मारकाच्या ऑडिटोरियममध्ये हा समारंभ पार पडला. 23
ऑगस्ट 2013 रोजी प्रदर्शित होत असलेल्या या चित्रपटातील गाणी स्वप्निल बांदोडकर, बेला शेंडे आणि पहिल्यांदाच मराठी
चित्रपटासाठी गाणारा प्रसनजीत कोसंबी तसेच मैथिली पेन्स-जोशी यांच्या आवाजात आहेत. हे सर्वच गायक या संगीत प्रकाशन
समारंभाला उपस्थित होते. चित्रपटात एकूण तीन गाणी आहेत.

’सतीश राजवाडे यांच्याबरोबर आम्ही याआधी केलेले दोन्ही चित्रपट हे रोमँटीक होते आणि त्यांचे संगीतही त्याच बाजाचे होते.
आमच्या त्या चित्रपटांतील संगीताला प्रेक्षकांनी उत्स्फूर्त प्रतिसाद दिला. या चित्रपटाच्या माध्यमातून अस्सल `रांगडा बाज’
पे्रक्षकांसमोर साजरा करत आहोत. तो सुध्दा प्रेक्षकांना भावेल. या चित्रपटात एकूण तीन गाणी आहेत आणि ती सर्वच झक्कास

Although Atul Kulkarni is one of the biggest stars of Marathi cinema, he recently proved he is still a Common Man at heart when he took the media for a ride quite literally. The actor hopped into a B.E.S.T bus and spoke at length about his upcoming TV show Savdhaan India – Mumbai Fights Back and his Marathi movie Popat while the vehicle took rounds of Mumbai’s Shivaji Park locality.

Here are some of the excerpts from the interaction he had:-

What is your show Savdhaan India – Mumbai Fights Back about?

Savdhaan India – Mumbai Fights Back will try to spread awareness on how to avoid various crimes by taking necessary precautions. We would show that despite these many crimes are taking place in our society; you can still safeguard yourself against them. We would put forth few things that would maybe help in reducing crime in Mumbai.

Although such crime shows portray the true scenario and help spread awareness, they also receive criticisms from a section of the society for showing a way to commit crimes.

I don’t know about other such shows so it won’t be right to comment on them. But Savdhaan India is a show that is doing well since last few months. To encourage crime is not at all the motto of the show and channel Life OK. On the contrary, we sternly speak against them. Even as an anchor, my only motto is to show how to safeguard yourself from crimes by changing your attitude.

Tell us about your upcoming movie Popat. What character are you playing in it?

It’s a comedy film. I play a photographer Dhanya who shoots weddings in a village in Maharashtra. The film is about four friends out of which three wish to make a film. The trio includes Dhanya into their project just because he has a camera. Then the story takes a serious turn. Director Satish Rajwade is known for giving social messages in a lighthearted manner. He has tried to do the same in this film too.

You are doing a comedy film in Marathi after a long time. Was this a deliberate decision to be away from the genre?

That is not the case. Two years ago I did a comedy in Hindi called Chaalis Chaurasi with Naseeruddin Shah, Kay Kay Menon and Ravi Kissen. I would surely love to do comedy. Looking at the chances I am getting in comedy, I think people would hardly be able to see me in serious roles (smiles).

Which are your upcoming films?

I am acting in the remake of Zanjeer. Before you ask which character I am playing from the original, I would like to clear that the character I am playing wasn’t there in the original Zanjeer (smiles). It’s a new character inspired from the late journalist J-Dey.
