Review:

Marathi cinema audience is regularly exposed to mainstream Hindi films. Therefore, the subject of underworld isn’t novel for them by any means. So, if you are making an underworld movie in today’s era, it is vital for it to have something new to narrate.

If not this, there has to be some high quality entertainment. Debutant director Chandrakant Kanse’s Dagadi Chawl turns out to be a one-time watch affair for it offers some fast-paced entertainment.

The film is based in Mumbai in 1996, an era when the underworld had a strong hold in the city. Suryakant Shinde aka Surya (Ankush Chaudhary) is a brave young man staying in Mumbai’s famous B.D.D Chawl. He works in a garage and is satisfied in his small little world. When the beautiful Sonal (Pooja Sawant) moves in to their chawl, Surya falls for her and vice versa.

However, Surya’s simple and perfect world turns upside down when he gets into a tussle with a group of goons. Although Surya makes them bite the dust, his troubles just begin. The men belong to the powerful and utterly ruthless gangster-turned-politician, Daddy (Makadand Deshpande) of Dagadi Chawl. Will Surya be able to survive against such a mighty evil force?

Dagadi Chawl is basically a realistic underworld tale but it is narrated in an entertaining manner. The fast-paced screenplay with regular action sequences and twists in the form of betrayals make sure you are glued to the screen. There is a nice balance maintained between realism and commercialism, although on some occasions, like the climax, the focus tilts more towards the latter.

The film can also boast of some stylish presentation, aided by some sleek and sharp editing and powerful background tunes. Aniket Khandagale’s camerawork too falls in the positive category. The era of 1996 is created in a fairly successful manner. Except on few occasions where tall skyscrapers are visible, which didn’t exist even 10 years ago. From the music, the Ganesh Visarjan song ‘Morya’ is enjoyable.

The film as a whole, however, doesn’t rise up to the expectations. The flashback period is not only lengthy but also predictable most of the times. This predictability works against the film the most because, as mentioned before, the audience has been exposed to such underworld sagas numerous times in masala Hindi films. Plus, the one incident that changes the life of Surya is also a tried and tested one.

Ankush Chaudhary is having a splendid run currently. He continues it with his believable act here as Surya. He juggles between being soft-hearted and angry with ease. But Makarand Deshpande is the most striking. He isn’t shown indulging in evil activities as it wasn’t needed. His small little glance is enough to generate terror. The actor playing DCP Khan puts on a convincing show.

Pooja Sawant does what is expected from the ‘heroine’ in such genre of films. Sanjay Khapre and Yatin Karyekar, as Daddy’s most trusted men, play their respective characters properly. Kamlesh Sawant is getting stereotyped as a ruthless cop. But, taking nothing away from him, he plays the character to perfection.

Overall:

Dagadi Chawl is for those who enjoy underworld action sagas. With the hype and the presence of Ankush Chaudhary, the film is expected to do well at the box office.

Eminent theater and film personality Makarand Deshpande known for his path breaking plays and films will now be seen in a role of a lifetime as the dreaded politician gangster Arun Gawli of ‘Dagdi Chawl’ in the film of the same name directed by Chandrakant Kanse. We spoke to the multi-faceted actor about his new film.

How did you prepare for your role of the iconic ‘Daddy’?

I extensively watched YOU TUBE footage of Gawli and read newspaper articles and books on Gawli and also met people who had seen him at close quarters and also I am a Mumbai boy so I was at ease essaying the dons character and since his physical attributes were similar, I found it easier to play the role.

How was the debutant director Chandrakant Kanse like?

Kanse is one of the most promising directors he has seen in recent times and that his taking was superb and and an amalgamation of fiction and cinematic liberty and his shot takings were simply marvelous. Also the producer Sangeeta Ahir is an extremely good producer and has provided everything needed to make a good film right from the sets to the props.

We hear the film has a track of a love story too?

The film revolves around Ankush and his love story and it is a pivotal part for Ankush and my character is a kind of catalyst in the film. Ankush is an old friend and we gelled well together on the sets.

What are your forthcoming ventures like?

I have a good role in a forthcoming Ram Gopal Verma film and also my directorial venture, a Marathi film, a thriller starring himself is on the verge of release. Also my recent film Panhala has earned me accolades and this role I did basically for my friend and director Nagesh Bhosle.

Ankush Chaudhari is one of the most good looking men in Marathi film industry and has starred in colossal hits like ‘Duniyadaari’, ‘Double Seat’ etc and now he will be starring in the realistic crime drama ‘Dagdi Chawl’ made famous by the gangster politician Arun Gawli aka Daddy . There are a lot of expectations from you after the big success of ‘Double Seat’.

Yes. I am aware of this and I am sure ‘Dagdi Chawl’ will fulfill all the expectations of my fans as I have played a completely different action role from ‘Double Seat’ which was more of a middle class drama and I am confident that my action role will be lapped up by the masses.

How did you prepare for your role in ‘Dagdi Chawl’?

I have seen the scenario with my own eyes as I grew up in the mill areas of Lalbaug which was the stronghold of Gawli and I have seen the turf wars, the murders and the violent attacks on each other by gang memners closely and I knew instantly how to portray my character.

How was it like working on the film?

It was great and we all put in our best especially the director Chandrakant Kanse who has assisted many big directors and knows his craft well and has done a good job on the film. Also Makarand Deshpande who plays Daddy has also done an excellent job.

The film looks slick and technically very perfect.

Yes. Our DOP especially has done a great job and the rest of the technical team also has done a technically superb job.

What about music?

There is very less scope for music or romance in the film.

How will you be promoting the film?

This is just the first event and we will be holding many more events to publicize the film. Our producers are really good and they have provided a good support in the making and promotions of the film
