Sharad Ponkshe is a reputed name in theater, film and television circles and is making his mark as an impressive actor. We spoke to Sharad about his forthcoming film and his career in general.

What is your role in ‘Sandook‘?

My role is ambiguous in the film because for most of the film I play a positive role seemingly but in the climax I turn out to be the bad guy.

What made you accept this film?

Actually I was not keen because I was busy with my plays and TV Shows but the producer and director Atul Kale were very insistent that I do this role and were willing to wait for me and I was also eager to work in the picturesque Konkan locations.

What is the USP of the film?

The USP is that talented actor Sumeet Raghavan is making his Marathi film debut in the film and it was great to work with him and the music of the film is also great and since the film is set in the British era , the art direction and cinematography is also excellent. What gives you the maximum satisfaction, films, serials or theater?

Theater is my passion and serials are my bread and butter and films are my ticket to popularity and fame.

Your controversial play ‘Mee Nathuram Godse’ we hear is being adapted for a film?

It seems so but the moralities are being worked out.

Marathi cinema, of late, seems to have come of age with a new breed of directors exploring different genres with great success. One such filmmaker is Atul Kale who has been consistently treating audience with different genres without sacrificing that crucial element of any film, ENTERTAINMENT and is continuing with this genre presenting, for the first time on Marathi silver screen, a Historical Comedy. Titled ‘Sandook’, it stars Sumeet Raghvan who is playing a lead on silver screen for the first time in his 3 decades of career. This, incidentally, also marks his debut in Marathi films. Vishwajit Gaikwad and Mandar Keni are producing Atul’s dream of 12 years under their banner ‘Orangen Entertainment’.

‘Sandook‘ is a historical comedy set in 1940s. It skillfully blends history with fantasy with ample doses of humour. Atul says, “‘Sandook’ is a dream come true for me. For 12 years I had nourished this dream. ‘Sandook’ is not an easy film to make as it involves a lot of VFX and also a genre of historical comedy is new for us.”

Equally elated Sumeet says, “Atul is my childhood buddy and I am extremely glad to be part of his dream of many years. I am also happy that I chose ‘Sandook’ as my first Marathi film. There had been many offers all these years but I was really waiting for something like ‘Sandook’. Besides Sumeet Raghvan, the film also stars Bhargavi Chirmule, Sharad Ponkshe, Rahul Mehendale, Arun Nalawde and Brandon J. Hill. Written by Atul Kale, Ashish Raikar and Subodh Khanolkar, cinematography is done by Ajit Reddy. Ace editor Sarvesh Parab has done the editing while Ajit–Sameer has composed chartbuster songs of ‘Sandook’ written by Guru Thakur.

Orangen Entertainment is extremely pleased in announcing its forthcoming Marathi film titled ‘ Sandook ’ directed by Atul Kale, produced by Vishu Gaikwad along with Mandar Keni .

‘Sandook’ is a comedy film set in the pre independence era with Sumeet Raghavan playing the lead in the film for the first time. The film is slated to go on floor in April with an ensemble cast featuring Sharad Ponkshe, Arun Nalawade and Anand Ingle.

After a string of successful films like ‘Matichya Chuli’, ‘De Dhakka’, ‘Shahanpan Dega Deva’, ‘Teecha Baap Tyacha Baap’ and ‘Asa Mee Ashi Tee’ director Atul Kale said ‘Sandook’ has always been my dream. If given a choice, Sandook would have been my first film, Its taken me more than twelve years to realize it; I am extremely excited to make my dream a reality and couldn’t have asked for better cast and crew. Sumit and me have been friends more than twenty years and he was my first and only choice for Sandook.

Commenting on this development Sumeet Raghavan said “ Its been a coup of sorts; 1) I am doing my first marathi film; 2) with my friend Atul who has been a chuddi buddy; 3) It’s a huge project, an ambitious one and I am really looking forward to a fantastic shooting schedule with a bunch of like minded blokes. Last but not the least it has been worth the wait for sure; ‘Amen!”.

Vishu Gaikwad said “After the success of Yedyanchi Jatra in 2011; we at Orangen Entertainment were looking for the right film to be associated with and the way ‘Sandook’ has shaped up, Mandar Keni and I are very confident that the audiences all over are going to love our offering. It’s taken us two years but with ‘Sandook’, It has definitely been worth the wait. Its rich in content, high on humor, packed with action and what makes the film stand out is they very fact that it is set in the pre independence era. We are very confident that Sandook is going to be loved by one and all.”

Atul Kale, Ashish Raikar and Subodh Khanolkar have written the screenplay for Sandook; Hrishikesh Joshi has penned the dialogues.

The film crew boasts of Ajith Reddy helming the direction of photography, Mahesh Kudalkar as the art director, Mahesh Sherla doing the costumes, Ajit – Sameer have been roped in to do the music, fight master Pradyuman Kumar would be designing all the action sequences and Umesh Jadhav would be choreographing the songs; The lyrics have been written by Guru Thakur.
