Maharashtra’s most loved writer, a cultural icon Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, aka Pu La Deshpande aka P.L. Deshpande aka Bhaai will soon be re-appearing on the silver screen! Just like his so many names Pu La had many talents! From being a writer, humorist, actor, dramatist, musician & beyond all an individual full of joy who brought joy to everyone who came in contact with him!

The Pu La Deshpande biopic is now all set to hit theatres this new year in 2019 on 4th Jan! Written by Ratnakar Matkari & Ganesh Matkari, directed by Mahesh Manjrekar & starring Sagar Deshmukh as Pu La along with a brigade of 70 other actors from Iravati Harshe, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Sachin Khedekar, Deepti Lele, Dalip Tahil, Saksham Kulkarni & others.

The interesting news is that this biopic will be released in two parts! The first part ‘Bhaai – Vyakti Kee Valli – Purvardh‘ is releasing on 4th of Jan 2019 & the second part will be releasing on 8th February! The trailer of the first part suggests us that the journey from Pu La’s childhood, to his younger days & the time when he got married would be covered in this!

The highlight of this trailer is the relationship between Pu La & Sunita Bai! While Sunita Bai is known as the lifelong partner of Pu La, there’s some complexity in Pu La’s married life as evident in the trailer! Not many people must be knowing about it & hence it would be interesting to see it unfold in the film!

‘Bhai – Vyakti Ki Valii’ is the title of the film which is directed by Mahesh Manjrekar & the screenplay of the film is written by popular film critic turned writer Ganesh Matkari & the dialogues are written by senior writer Ratnakar Matkari who had worked on Pula’s writings many times in theatre! Everyone was excited to see who plays the role of Pula in this biopic. Sagar Deshmukh of ‘YZ’ fame seems to fit the part perfectly as evident from the teaser. Moreover, the film also stars a brigade of stars that include Iravati Harshe, Hrishikesh Joshi, Deepti Lele & others.

‘Bhai – Vyakti Ki Valli’ is set to release on 4th Jan! The film is produced by Mahesh Manjrekar Movies & Phalke’s Factory & is being presented by ‘Viacom 18 Motion Pictures’. Pula Deshpande is a house hold name in Maharashtra. Generations after generation we have been loving Pula’s literature & he has entertained us & enlightened us in so many ways from plays, stand up comedy, music & even films. Pula is the most iconic Maharashtrian figure who should represent our culture on a national & international level.

Soon this will be changed as from 21^st July a new Hindi serial on SAB TV titled ‘Namune’ will introduce characters created by Pula Deshpande to the national audiences! Popular Marathi actor Sanjay Mone will be portraying Pula in this serial! Along with that senior actor Dilip Prabhawalkar will be seen playing ‘Hari Tatya’, Subodh Bhave will be portraying the dashing character of ‘Nanda Pradhan’ & so on many Marathi actors will be seen playing different characters in ‘Namune’!

This is certainly one important step in expanding the reach of Marathi literature & getting love from overall Indian audiences! ‘Namune’ will be telecasted on SAB TV every Saturday & Sunday at 9 pm!

12th of June is remembered as a sad day in Maharashtra’s history. Today is the day when Maharashtra’s most celebrated cultural icon, the great writer-actor-humorist-musician-playwright-director & more importantly a great human being Pu La Deshpande left this world. Yesterday the announcement of a Pu La Deshpande biopic was made at an event in Worli, Mumbai!

While the names of the artists & actors associated with the film were kept under wraps before the event, the news was disclosed at the event slowly! The film is a joint venture between Great Maratha Entertainment, Mahesh Manjrekar Movies & Phalke’s Factory & is to be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. The film was officially announced by MNS Chief Raj Thackeray who was present at the event as the guest of honor.

Mahesh Manjrekar revealed the entire team of the film starting from the writers; senior writer Ratnakar Matkari as the dialogue writer, Ratnakar Matkari’s son film critic & writer Ganesh Matkari as the screenplay writer & music director Ajit Parab. While the lead cast of the film was also revealed at the event in the same get up of the characters they would portray in the film.

Actor Sagar Deshmukh (known for his lead performance in ‘YZ’) will be portraying Pu La Deshpande in the film! And he looked perfect for the part in that get up designed by the popular makeup artist Vikram Gaikwad. The role of Sunita Deshpande wife of Pu La, is being played by the ‘Aapla Manus’ fame actress Iravati Harshe! She too looked perfect in her part. The rest of the cast includes Sachin Khedekar, Sagar Karande, Deepti Lele, Pravin Tarde, Sarang Sathaye, Vidyadhar Joshi, Chittaranjan Giri, Ashwini Giri, Padmanabh Bind, Ajay Purkar & others.

Senior writer Ratnakar Matkari & Raj Thackeray both talked about their memories connected to Pu La & how they felt blessed to have known him & met him in person. For all the Pu La fans this film promises to give us a new perspective about Pu La the human being more than the writer he was or the characters he created as this film will be focusing on his actual life unknown to many!

Pu La Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy has arranged its annual PuLa Yuva Mahotsav from 8 to 12 November at Mumbai. This Mahotsav celebrates Theatre, Dance, Drama, music and artistes for the contemporary youth. P. L. Deshpande was not only a famous writer but he was also patron of various art forms. The Mahotsav will start at 3 pm on November 8 with Vaada Chirebandi, a drama written by Mahesh Elkunchwar and directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni will return to stage after twenty years. In the evening there will be ten different folk dance performances. The night will shine with the various one-act plays from 9 pm to 6 am. On November 9, the early morning will start with the musical performances by Classical singer Deepika Bhide and flute player Nash Nobert. From 10 am to 1 pm, there will be an interactive program with Mangesh Borgavkar, Milind Joshi, Atul Parchure, Vaishali Made, Gauri Kothari, Nandesh Umap and Samriddhi Pore. The anchoring will be by Jyoti Ambekar. At 4 pm, Mission Mummy Daddy, a children drama by Pratidnya Natyarang Sanstha. At 5: 30 pm, Girish Pande directed Manasaparees Mendhare baree will be performed. At 7 pm, a performance by Gazal maestro Bheemrao Panchale: Ek Jakham Sugandhi.

On November 10, ten different rockbands like Highway 61, Samved, Indo Gypsies, Laxmi Bomb, Darshn, Color Tales, Meghadhanush will perform from morning. At 4 pm, a poetic performance by Visubhau Bapat: Kutumb Rangalay Kaavyaat. From 6 pm onwards, classical dance performances by Amrita Panchal, Uma Dogra, Sumit Nagdeo and Vaibhav Arekar. On Tuesday, 10 am there will be a screening of Amhi Jato Amuchya Gaava, a film by Pula. At 4 pm, classical singing by Prashant Kalundrekar and At 6 pm, a drama by hearing challenged students- Bharari will be performed. At 7 pm, Mallakhamb demonstrations and from 7:30 pm, Shaaheeree Jalsa by Madhu Khamkar, Shantaram Chavan, Bhikaji Bhosle, Datta Thule, Krushnkant Jadhav, Nilesh Jadhav and Dada Manjerkar. On November 12, Smita Apte will perform Stree Vividha, a program encapsulating changes in the life of women since ancient times. At 4 pm, Utsav Maharashtracha, a program showcasing folk arts of Maharashtra. At 6 pm, Mayur Vaidya, a renowned choreographer will perform Sama: Ek Maihil. The Mahotsav will end by the evergreen “Vaaryaavarachee varaat” written by P. L. Deshpande.

Another highlight of this event will be various workshops in acting, costumes, anchoring, Shahiri, Mallkhamb, Odisi and Bharatantyam etc from November 9 to 12 between 11 am to 5 pm. All the programs, performances and workshops are free of cost.
