A Nikhil Mahajan directorial ‘Pune 52’ was a one of a kind dark thriller that has lasted the test of time & is now considered a cult movie. Again Sai had a supportive part in the film but she stood out in her performance throughout the film, even when an actor of Girish Kulkarni’s calibre was in front of us. Sai played a very realistic version of a bold young woman in this film & though it raised many eyebrows her performance never looked vulgar on the screen!

2. Anumati 

We could have well had another Sai’s performance from another film (Postcard) by the same director (Gajendra Ahire) in this list! Both of these performances are again are of a supporting character but both of them prove Sai’s versatility! In Anumati she played a simple minded middle class married woman in a time when she was probably Marathi cinema’s most glamorous face! The ease in this performance is what stands out.

2016 was a fabulous year for Sai! YZ, Vazandar, Jaundya Na Balasaheb & Family Katta all of her performances where distinctly different from each other! But in Family Katta she was at the peak of her emotional brilliance! She played a complex character of a girl who is married to a much older man, and has been missing her father in her post married life. A moment comes where she outpours all of her emotional struggle in front of her father, but then it’s too late! Long after the film gets over we still feel the impact of that one scene in which Sai outperforms herself in every way!

Gajanan finds it difficult to adjust in Pune until he meets ‘Battis’, Gajanan’s student he teaches him the philosophy of ‘YZ’. YZ Marathi Movie Review :

Marathi Cinema is having a particularly ordinary year. We are more than half way through 2016 and there are only a handful films that are worth recommending. But now as we have entered the later part of the year, things are looking brighter. After the charming Half Ticket that released last month, with YZ we now have another marathi film that is worth watching in the theatres. YZ is not only laden with tongue-in-cheek humour as the title and the promos would suggest, but is also a thoughtful film.The note on which the film ends is what left me pleasantly surprised and most impressed.

YZ is a film of two different halves. The film begins rather humorously with an introduction to the protagonist Gajanan (Sagar Deshmukh) – a single, virgin and socially very awkward man in his 30s. A simpleton to the core, he is born and brought up in Wai and now teaches history in a local college. He dreams of visiting the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, at least once in his life time.A shy and non-engineer guy like Gajanan has troubles getting married. He doesn’t have the confidence to approach a woman himself and isn’t a very saleable ‘product’ in the arrange marriage market either.The scenes in the ‘vadhu-var melava’ wherein we are shown Gajanan being introduced with a remark that he has no four-wheelerare particularly humourous. He is transferred to a Pune collegeon a temporary basis for 6 months and comes into contact with the college cool dude – ‘Battees'(Akshay Tanksale). How these 6 months in Pune spent by Gajanan have a profound impact on him as a person and on his life, is what YZ is all about. A kind of coming of age film, albeit of a man aged 33.The early parts of the film are full of funny lines, mostly involving the conversation between Battees and Gajanan, as the former is trying to teach him to develop a personality that would impress women. Battees calls this a YZ attitude. There is nothing really very original in the plot seen before in films like Hitch, but at least the film made me laugh more than a couple of times.

The film breezes through the first quarter of the duration, but without much substance or intent, till Gajanan is visited by the prospective bride Parnarekha (Sai Tamhankar). The Parnarekha chapter of Gajanan’s six month stay has to be the most engaging as her well drawn character sketch gives the scenes a lot of humour born out of situations and character quirks. It has the right mix of content, direction and humour. Saie Tamhankar’s convincing performance goes along way in making her portions of the film so impressive.

As the film enters the second half there is a sudden switch in the mood with the film getting thoughtful. It would have been easier for the makers of the film to stick to the fun filled atmosphere of the first half, but they haven’t and that is certainly commendable. However, as the film starts getting a little depth you cannot shrug of the feeling of the proceedings turning a little dull. Take for example the long preachy speech by Gajanan in his lecture about how we are more interested in building statues of our historical figures but don’t bother to imbibe the values they stood for. Though the thought behind the second half is appreciable, some scenes get a rather cliched treatment like the one in which Gajanan’s Aunt confesses how married life sucked away her love for reading. Wiser from his experience with Parnarekha and courtesy the company of Battees, Gajanan starts to express himself more freely. He develops a confidence to just be himself. He moves out of his Aunt’s house with whom he was staying in Pune and starts living in a rented place. This new avatar of his impresses his cousin’s young friend Antara and she develops feelings for him. Also, Gajanan coincidentally meets his long lost childhood sweetheart Saylee (Mukta Barve) and realises that he still has feelings for her even after all these years. Saylee is in a serious relationship with another man, but still not married. Parnarekha, in the meanwhile, again meets Gajanan in a reformed avatar taking him by pleasant surprise.

So, Gajanan – the once perennially single man – now suddenly has three women in his life with whom he has the possibility of getting into a relationship. As an audience we try to second guess the lady Gajanan will walk down the aisle with, but it is here that the filmmakers pull out an ace byside-stepping all cliches and ending on a note that very few filmmakers in India would have chosen to.

Theatre artiste Sagar Deshmukh delivers a knockout performance in his first major role in a film. The camaraderie he shares with Akshay Tanksale is one of the biggest positive of the film.There is hardly a dull moment when the two are on screen together. Another major plus are the consistently funny dialogue. The other ladies Parna Pethe and Mukta Barve don’t get a lot of screen time, but are well cast.

The writer-director pair of Kshitij Patwardhan and Sameer Vidwans have come up with another fine film after last year’s Double Seat. Here’s wishing the pair treat us with more such quality cinema which we haven’t seen much in the recent past.

Overall:

YZ is a consistently humourous film, with a solid performance by the lead actor Sagar Deshmukh. It also leaves you pleasantly surprised by its end.

5. The writer and director of this film- Kshitij Patwardhan and Sameer Vidwans have given us good stories like Double Seat in the past. The film has a different storyline and it is expected to give us a great entertainment.

It seems that YZ team is not leaving any stone unturned to make their film innovative. Right from the title of the film to colorful trailers, this film is making audience very interested about this film.

After creating havoc with song “O! Kaka”, the YZ has gone into completely another direction and presented a Sanskrit song. Though the song is written in Sanskrit, it has a very cool blend of jazz and classical. The song has been picturized on Sagar Deshmukh and Parna Pethe. Parna looks sizzling in her Odissi dance costume. The song uses many classic Sanskrit drama visuals and that is what makes it very remarkable. Considering the fact, that Parna plays role of a Sanskrit student, the dream sequence and the lyrics from Shakuntal (by Kalidasa) makes sense and also shows the conceptualizing of the film.

The music has been composed by Jasraj, Hrishikesh and Saurabh- three guys who has changed face of Marathi film music. Sameer Vidwans directed YZ is gearing up for the promotions and the makers have just released the official trailer of the film. The film stars Sagar Deshmukh, Akshay Tanksale, Sai Tamhankar, Parn Pethe and Mukta Barve in the lead roles. The film has been written by Kshitij Patwardhan and music has been composed by Saurabh, Jasraj and Hrishikesh.

The trailer looks very refreshing and thrilling. The film promises to be a colorful comedy around a middle-aged professor. Parna will be seen as a Sanskrit student and Sai as a shy, timid woman. Parna looks very fresh as a college student. Sai has some more looks in the dream sequences which will definitely become trendy. The trailer just gives a hint of Mukta Barve but does not give any clear idea about her role.

Akshay has already becoming hit with his super dance item- O kaka. In the trailer he gives amazing comic punches. However, the entire film is focusing on Sagar Deshmukh. The talented actor is looking very confident and nails the character to the perfection. His looks, dialogue delivery, awkward mannerisms and cute smile make this character Abab very lovable.

YZ, a new film by Sameer Vidwans has recently announced its new cast member- Mukta Barve. Earlier, the innovative film promo has introduced Saie Tamhankar and Parna Pethe in hatke roles. The recent addition in this female casting has surely increased our anticipation for this film.

The film will be releasing on 12 August and getting ready for the promotions. The film has been produced by Sanjay Chhabriya of Everest Entertainment and Anish Jog from Pratisad Productions.

YZ stars Saie as Parnarekha, a girl who is very spiritual and speaks in a traditional Marathi. Parna will be seen as a modern girl learning Sanskrit. Though, the role of Mukta has been kept secret yet, her ultra modern look in the teasers has informed us that this is something Mukta has never done on screen. Director Sameer Vidwans commented that, audience has never seen Saee or Mukta in such brilliant and different roles. Everyone knows what a great actor Mukta is. However, I love her way of understanding of her role and her dedication.” He did not tell is about her role but told to keep an eye on the trailer releasing next week.

The name YZ itself had caught the attention of Marathi movie buffs. It was bold and wacky at the same time. The teaser was eagerly looked forward to. Everybody wanted a glimpse into the film. And now it is out!

The teaser is as strange as the title. In the opening shot we see Sagar Deshmukh listening to Marathi akashwani program that explains queries that adolescents have with respect to their puberty. While listening to the radio he suddenly bursts out laughing and his Mother and sister are then shown worriedly looking at him. We are then shown certain vignettes which have Sai Tamhankar as a bride, Akshay Tanksale dressed up as Salim with Parna Pethe as his Anarkali. The teaser ends with the voice over saying that each of us has some side hidden deep within us which he calls YZ.

We can’t really make out much from the teaser, but our interest is certainly piqued. Coming from the team of Kshitij Patwardhan and Sameer Vidwans who have given us a film like Double Seat, we can surely expect something with substance in the film. The strong cast will certainly pull the audience to the theatre.
