Quick Viewpoint: Triple Seat succeeds on a fundamental criteria in small parts through the film. The criteria being the execution of a ‘scene’. There’s some kind of emotional relativity in quite a few emotional scenes of the film, even when the dialogues sound like random whatsapp statuses!

What Works?

  • The above mentioned emotional relativity can be traced back to two things. One is the precise use of background music that is not loud but is emotionally complementing to the scenes and the other being Ankush Chaudhari’s performance and a bit of Shivani Surve’s performance too.
  • Along with the background score the overall musical score of the film is pretty decent. Especially when good music is becoming more and more rare in Marathi cinema today. All the songs highlight the feeling of romance, sometimes pleasant and sometimes dramatic!
  • The first half of the film works really well whenever it takes itself seriously. But a major turning point in the plot takes the impact of it away from us.
  • Even with many logical plotholes, inconsistent screenplay of the film by the end we are bothered about the characters in the film and in a romantic drama that is a positive!

What Fails?

  • The poor dialogue writing harms the film in multiple ways. Especially when they try to be general about life and love, they sound like cardboard cut outs from a random social media viral message!
  • The film fails as a family drama, which it attempted in the second half. The family in the picture never feels like an actual family.
  • There’s a major plot point where the film randomly turns into a comedy of errors without inflicting any humor whatsoever. The bigger problem is that throughout the second half it has to forcefully back the plot twist and go accordingly in the illogical direction. We wonder if the twist hadn’t come, the film might have well gone on to a different path of becoming a lighter romantic film.
  • There’s an objective narrator-like character of an advocate (played by a popular Hindi character actor Rakesh Bedi) in the film. It’s a trait that is used to make things appear more important than how much important they actually feel to you! It’s completely unessential to the film and again avoiding that could have made the film much simpler and easier to like!

Final Verdict: ‘Triple Seat’ is few inches away from being called a harmless one time watch for romantic movie fans, but those inches could be covered up if you are a dedicated Ankush Chaudhari fan and/or an admirer of Shivani Surve!

12th of June is remembered as a sad day in Maharashtra’s history. Today is the day when Maharashtra’s most celebrated cultural icon, the great writer-actor-humorist-musician-playwright-director & more importantly a great human being Pu La Deshpande left this world. Yesterday the announcement of a Pu La Deshpande biopic was made at an event in Worli, Mumbai!

While the names of the artists & actors associated with the film were kept under wraps before the event, the news was disclosed at the event slowly! The film is a joint venture between Great Maratha Entertainment, Mahesh Manjrekar Movies & Phalke’s Factory & is to be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. The film was officially announced by MNS Chief Raj Thackeray who was present at the event as the guest of honor.

Mahesh Manjrekar revealed the entire team of the film starting from the writers; senior writer Ratnakar Matkari as the dialogue writer, Ratnakar Matkari’s son film critic & writer Ganesh Matkari as the screenplay writer & music director Ajit Parab. While the lead cast of the film was also revealed at the event in the same get up of the characters they would portray in the film.

Actor Sagar Deshmukh (known for his lead performance in ‘YZ’) will be portraying Pu La Deshpande in the film! And he looked perfect for the part in that get up designed by the popular makeup artist Vikram Gaikwad. The role of Sunita Deshpande wife of Pu La, is being played by the ‘Aapla Manus’ fame actress Iravati Harshe! She too looked perfect in her part. The rest of the cast includes Sachin Khedekar, Sagar Karande, Deepti Lele, Pravin Tarde, Sarang Sathaye, Vidyadhar Joshi, Chittaranjan Giri, Ashwini Giri, Padmanabh Bind, Ajay Purkar & others.

Raj Thackeray Mahesh Manjrekar Pu La Deshpande biopic Bhai - Vyakti Ki Valli

Senior writer Ratnakar Matkari & Raj Thackeray both talked about their memories connected to Pu La & how they felt blessed to have known him & met him in person. For all the Pu La fans this film promises to give us a new perspective about Pu La the human being more than the writer he was or the characters he created as this film will be focusing on his actual life unknown to many!

Maska Review (Marathi Movie):

What exactly is situational comedy? It is that kind of comedy that is comedy for the audiences but not for the characters involved in the situation. Now this kind of situational comedy is mostly known to us in Marathi cinema through stories based in a rural backdrop. We have fewer films in this type based in cities. Add to that the theme of ‘Con’ movies. ‘Maska’ is a blend of these three; an urban situational con comedy!

The biggest strength of Maska is not in it’s genres or even the basic story of the film. The strength lies in the little detailing, many moments that are so new to look at. Throughout, the film doesn’t miss a single beat. It feels like a perfectly choreographed stage performance that just flows like ‘Maska’! Aniket Vishwasrao has been introduced to us as the victim in this ‘con’. There’s very little that we know about him, he’s just the plain normal rich guy. And the film didn’t need any more depth in his characterization too! As revealed in the promotions Shashank Shende, Prarthana Behere & Pranav Raorane are a team of con artists. There’s an inherent chemistry between these three. And then there is Chinmay Mandlekar who enters later in the scheme of things.

Just like in thrillers, in situational comedies like these when the narrative slowly keeps moving ahead, there’s a need of ‘tension’. This tension is what brings the audiences to the edge of the seat. And ‘Maska’ has that throughout. You are skeptical about the characters, you anticipate them to lose their patients & you also feel their restlessness within you! And during this whole tension ‘Maska’ has atom bombs of humour! Pure unadulterated situational humour! Such films can’t afford to involve the audiences emotionally, so very smartly ‘Maska’ avoids that throughout. We need the emotional objectivity to enjoy this kind of films!

All of these little decisions & additions should be credited to the director of the film Priyadarshan Jadhav. And this film is completely a showcase for him as a writer & director! A slight madness is essential to come up with a film like ‘Maska’. Priyadarshan Jadhav always seemed to have that, and here because of complete creative control he has finally unleashed it! There’s only one subjective drawback in the film. The end is a bit predictable, it could have been something crazier or totally out of the box. But that is something only obsessive film watchers like me would feel. For the general audiences it won’t really be predictable, hence very subjective!

There are two different levels or styles of performances in the film. One that is subtle, to the point & a bit underplayed, Prarthana & Aniket Vishwasrao are in that mode & both of them are at their very best! Then there’s slightly more expressive style in which Shashank Shende & Pranav Raorane develop a terrific give & take generating countless humorous moments, while Chinmay Mandlekar’s performance just feels slightly more animated in some scenes but even he has this one terrific ‘bar’ scene with Aniket Vishwasrao! Again half the credit for these performances goes to Priyadarshan for synchronizing them together & creating a symphony out of it.

‘Maska’ throughout the narrative never takes itself seriously. It’s a ‘genre’ film, one that should be distant from reality (though it’s based on reality) or the seriousness of reality to be specific. Quite a few recent Marathi films in my memory just mindlessly became serious at some point & started giving a moral lesson to the audiences. Honestly there’s nothing more off putting in a ‘genre’ film than this social conscience.

Overall:

Maska’ should not be missed! It’s pure, mad entertainment, the best kind of escapism & it doesn’t insult your intelligence even once!

The teaser of ‘Maska’ incorporates various traits of different genres. From thriller, suspense to comedy & romance, the film stars Chinmay Mandlekar, Aniket Vishwasrao, Prarthana Behere, Vidyadhar Joshi & Shashank Shende who all bring in their own styles through the diverse characters they portray. Prarthana Behere especially seems to be in never before seen avatar which is bold & smart!

‘Maska’ is set to release on 1st June. This teaser has already created a lot of hype for the film. We have enjoyed Priyadarshan’s works as an actor & writer & now we his cinematic vision as a director too looks exciting! Though he has directed Marathi plays before this is first film as a director.

Cycle Movie Review:

Prakash Kunte directorial ‘Cycle’ is similar to some of his previous works in terms of what it achieves & what it doesn’t. It achieves soulful, simplistic & technically polished story telling standards, but lacks in details of the actual ‘story’. The stories are usually simple enough that they could be described in one line. Though Kunte has that much command over the medium to make a beautiful film out of them, in case of ‘Cycle’ most of the times we don’t mind the compactness of the one line story.

To begin with the flaws, two of the prominent characters in the film, of two thieves played by Priyadarshan Jadhav & Bhalchandra Kadam lack the comic energy between them. Strangely both seem to be giving deliberate understated performances, which didn’t work for me. The subtleness works better when there’s more to read between, here it was limited. Keshav played by Hrishikesh Joshi, his wife (Deepti Lele), Keshav’s father & Keshav’s little girl all of them aren’t enough familiar to us when the conflict of the film has begun.

The problem isn’t that, the problem is that we expect to know them more now that the conflict is active. Instead the narrative is completely concerned with the thieves. I felt since the film was already shorter in length it did have scope for more screen time for Keshav & his family in the second half. ‘Cycle’ is a story which has a sense of fantasy to it, or a sense of allegory, hence finding logic in every little incident that occurs isn’t fair to the film. Yet the incidents that are primary in taking the narrative forward need to be logically backed. ‘Cycle’ lacks this backing at quite a few instances especially in the whole track connected with the thieves.

Hrishikesh Joshi’s performance is one of the biggest strength of the film, his father, wife, daughter all of them are a picture perfect family. The visual feel of the film makes a larger impact in making us feel what the story wants us to feel, more than the story itself, cinematographer Amalendu Choudary deserves the credit for it. The overall openness of the story’s ‘message’ or what it wants to say gives good depth to the film. It shies away from telling us exactly what it meant, it let’s us choose between a few meanings or maybe it says it means all of them. That is the reason why ‘Cycle’ works when seen in totality.

The casting is pitch-perfect, yes even with Bhau Kadam & Priyadarshan (though their understated style didn’t work for me), Deepti Lele is a talented actress who should be seen in interesting roles in the future. The little girl too is lot better than what we see kids doing in daily soaps these days. ‘Cycle’ manages to make us feel it’s 1948 in a small coastal village & also encapsulates the beautiful locales of Konkan.

‘Goodness’ has a merit of it’s own when it’s translated in art earnestly, ‘Cycle’ manages that first & foremost. Better characterizations of the thieves, slightly more screen time to Keshav & co. ‘Cycle’ would have been a ‘complete’ feel good adventure, yet it is good enough to be seen in theatres with our families this summer holidays!

Overall:

‘Cycle’ is family entertainment set in the old world where ‘goodness’ was more common than today. And it has been backed by the technical fluidity of today’s times.
