Sarpanch Bhagirath Marathi Movie Review:

Sarpanch Bhagirath is one of those films that despite a having a good enough story suffers from a weak screenplay and mediocre direction.

Bhagirath (Upendra Limaye) has been elected as the sarpanch of Lokapur. Sadakaka Deshmukh has been the sarpanch of the village for three long decades. He finally has to relinquish his position as the office of the sarpanch came under reservation. Shrewd politician that he is, Sadakaka manages to get his man – Bhagirath – onto the office of Sarpanch. The new sarpanch is a straight-forward man with modest means. He is slightly ignorant in the matters of politics, but is grateful of getting an opportunity to make a difference to his society. Within no time he gets a good dose of how dirty politics can become.

Sarpanch Bhagirath Marathi Movie PosterRahi – Bhagirath’s wife – is a mother of two girls. She harbors a wish of a third child, preferably a boy. Only after she conceives and is well into the 4th month of her pregnancy, Bhagirath comes to know that a third child will force him to surrender his position as the sarpanch. Rahi is unwilling, but Sadakaka is relentless in putting pressure on Bhagirath to abort the child.

Sarpanch Bhagirath then goes on to portray the turmoil in the mind of Bhagirath who is torn between holding on to the office of the Sarpanch and facing his wife who will naturally be very upset with the suggestion of aborting the child. While doing so, the film also makes a point to comment on the various social issues such as the caste discrimination, religious strife, corruption, etc. But, strangely, domestic violence is not considered a bad enough vice as Bhagirath, who has been shown to be a fairly liberal fellow, is remorseless about raising a hand on his pregnant wife.

The story of the film definitely had something in it to hold your attention. However, the screenplay here is rather weak with none of the characters other than Bhagirath getting fully developed. The mediocre direction also doesn’t help. The film has a dated look to it, and feels as if it has been shot in the 90s.

The director has managed to cast a lot of quality actors and it is their performance that makes the film watchable. Mohan Agashe as the shrewd veteran politician is spot on. Limaye, too, is convincing in his role of the young farmer pushed into the nasty world of politics. However, none of the performances are enough to save the film from becoming a bore.

Overall:

A potentially interesting story marred by a shoddy screenplay and dated direction.

    Synopsis:

Sada kaka Deshmukh (MOHAN AGASHE) has been the head of the village of Lokapur for 30 years. But he has to step down from this powerful position due to the reservations policy. The reserved candidate in Lokapur has to be an OBC(Other Backward Classes). Knowing that a wealthy OBC village head would not heed him, Sada kaka gets Bhagirath Girme (UPENDRA LIMAYE ) elected, because he is confident that Bhagirath will do exactly as he says. Bhagirath’s small family consists of his parents, wife (VEENA JAMKAR) and two daughters. He is a simple man who lives a straightforward life, not looking beyond himself and his farm. In his family, nobody has held a powerful position in several generations. Once in awhile, he has discussions on politics and society with his friend Shridhar (KISHOR KADAM), who is a poet and believes in the eradication of caste. However, reservations mean a certificate, which can be obtained only through one’s caste. Shridhar feels that the policy of reservations has started a journey in the opposite direction while Bhagirath derives satisfaction from being able to work for poor people. But his dreams suffer a setback when Rahi, his wife, gets pregnant for the third time. Rahi wants to give birth to a baby who will become an MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly). However, since the law does not allow a person to be a village headman if he has a third child, Sada kaka wants her to have an abortion. What does Bhagirath tell Rahi? Does Rahi agree with him? This film tells the story of Rahi and Bhagirath, the OBC village headman. And also of the six thousand plus castes of this country and of the millions of voters who are tangled in the caste system. God has created only two genders – male and female, xx and xy. But man has created a third gender called ‘caste’. Who will abort that?

    Review:

Chiranjiv starts with a disclaimer that goes something on the lines of ‘ This film does not support any superstitions, but is raising a case against it.’ Now, just the fact that this disclaimer has been added is an ominous sign that it has failed to achieve what it had set out to.

The film is about a family in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, who have supposedly been cursed with at least one of the male members of every generation of their family losing their mind. The film begins with the youngest member of their family winning a Sahitya Akademi award for his book titled ‘Chiranjiv’. The film goes into a flashback which is also supposedly what the story of the novel is.

Chiranjeev Marathi Movie PosterThe plot which is based in the 1980s of rural Maharashtra also seems to belong to that rather forgettable era of puerile melodramas. In the film, we have Ganya Kaka (Ravi Kale) who has been chained and locked into the loft as the aforementioned curse has supposedly made him lose his mind. After he commits suicide, the family, which has blind faith in superstitions, is shown to be worried who the curse will pass on to. Within a day after Ganya Kaka’s death, his nephew, Keshav (Bharat Jadhav) wakes up startled from a nightmare. This episode makes the family fear that the curse has been passed on to Keshav. After consulting a fraud fortune teller, the family starts to believe in the curse and also the social circle in which Keshav hangs around. The film attempts to portray how a society that has blind faith in superstitions can make the sanest of mind insane.

The film then goes on to milk the melodrama in the plot. The second half shows the downward spiral of Keshav into insanity. The idea here was to show how a society steeped in superstitions and blind faith can turn a sane mane into an insane one. However, the scenes are so clichéd and the treatment so loud that you are left wondering what the makers of the film were exactly trying to do here. The staging of the scenes is quite poor and the amateurish acting by some of the supporting actors does not help either. The only opposition to the evil act shown in the film is by Keshav’s brother. But the character is so shoddily written that it irritatingly flip flops from supporting superstitions in one scene and opposing them in the next.

The director Ramesh More, who has previous made films like Amhi Ka Tisre and Champions, had a decent cast at his disposal with actors like Kishore Kadam, Bharat Jadhav and Alka Athalye. However, the bizarre plot, inferior screenplay and loud direction blunts any impact their performances could have made.

    Overall :

Chiranjiv is a film that belongs to the 1980s, much like the period it is based in. It is unbearably melodramatic with a plot that borders on being ridiculous. It totally fails to raise any sort of a case against blind faith in superstitions.

DAR Film Distributors (DFD) today announced that it would be releasing Jayshree Motion Pictures National Award winning Marathi feature film ‘Dhag’. Directed by Shivaji Lotan Patil, the film which has won over 47 Awards, including 3 National Awards, is set for a 07 March 2014 release.

While his father’s untimely death opens the gates of opportunity for young Krishna, the plight of his widowed helpless mother reels him back to his origins.
