Review:

Films with outdated subjects can work if there is some sensibility and conviction in the treatment. Sadly, that is not the case with debutant director Sonali Bangera’s Sugar Salt Aani Prem. Its obsolete theme is narrated with immaturity and clichés, making it unintentionally hilarious. On top of that, the title has absolutely no relevance with the content. 

The film explores three parallel stories. Soumya’s (Kranti Redkar) husband Ravindra, (Prasad Oak) a Robotic Scientist, has painstakingly developed a product that would help physically challenged.Aditi’s (Sonali Kulkarni) relation with her husband Rahul (Sameer Dharmadhikari) is deteriorating since he doesn’t approve their autistic child. Ajay (Ajinkya Deo), a money-minded, status-conscious businessman, is embarrassed with his wife Ananya’s (Shilpa Tulaskar) interest in social work.

Although Ravindra has toiled four years to make his product, he doesn’t wish to make a fortune out of it since his motto is to help the needy. It is his noble intention that threatens the future of his project. How the three stories interconnect and how Soumya, Aditi and Ananya join hands and form a bond forms the rest of the story.

The film has noble intentions but good intentions do not necessarily transform into good films, like it happens in this case. The basic plot is established after the first half. Till then it is unclear what the film is exactly about as there are too many parallel issues running simultaneously without proper flow.

Plus, during this time, the situations thrown in and dialogues used are outdated. The same can be said even for the basic plot while the climax turns out to be one of the most clichéd or film-iest item; something that used to be a specialty of Bollywood. The main motto of Sugar Salt Aani Prem is to make a brave feminist statement. But it just doesn’t have any effect since it is done in a too jingoistic and corny manner.

And, as mentioned before, such a storyline brings no justification of the title. Apart from a situation in the second half between Ajay and the residents of a poor locality, there is hardly anything that generates any appeal; not even the song compositions. The background score is a mixture of clichéd tunes and some irritatingly loud alaaps.

Such content, obviously, affects the performances. Shilpa Tulaskar is the only one that provides a sensible act. Kranti Redkar is average. A quality performer like Sonali Kularni doesn’t impress. She is unnecessarily loud once again after Aga Bai Arechya 2. Prasad Oak and Ajinkya Deo chip in with decent acts. Sameer Dharmadhikari appears uninterested. Yatin Karyekar is a good actor. But his villainous act appears funny over here.

Overall:

Sugar Salt Aani Prem suffers from an outdated content and amateur treatment. It hardly has any chance at the box office.

Sonali Bangera is one of the latest entrants in the buzzing Marathifilmworld and she is all set to wow the audiences with her romantic comedy ‘SUGAR SALT ANI PREM‘. We spoke to Sonali about her new film and this is what she told us.

How did this concept of making a film come to you?

I was always inclined towards creative writing and I wrote this script about three loving couples and approached a few people with my script and luckily they liked it and finally my producer Mr.Abhishek Jaokar agreed to produce it even though I was new and had no prior experience.

Did you have any technical experience of shooting a film?

Not at all. Absolutely none but the credit goes to my entire technical crew and the shooting crew who made my dream possible.

What is the film all about?

It’s about three men and three women who are in a relationship and this story is basically of three girl characters and the men who come in their lives.

How did you go about casting for the film?

I had to get the actors I envisaged for the roles and so I was hell bent on talking actors who I thought fitted the roles like Ajinkya Dev and Sonali Kulkarni Senior and they were kind enough to work with me. Also I was fortunate to have talented actors like Prasad Oak, Shilpa Tulaskar, Kranti Redkar, Sameer Dharmadhikari,etc.

Is it difficult for a woman director to make her debut film?

Not at all. There are so many successful women directors today and also films with female protagonists that are becoming successful in

With it’s title invoking a lot of interest producer director Sonali Bangera’s ‘Sugar Salt Ani Prem‘ had it’s grand musical launch in the presence of artistes and technicians and other luminaries . The music was released art the hands of eminent singer composer Shankar Mahadevan and then Shankar’ s two sons Siddharth and Shivam belted out some some songs from the film in their sweet voices.The film is about friendship, love and feelings and the lyrics by Mandar Cholkar were set to music by new composer duo Siddharth Mahadevan and Soumil Shringarpure .
