Though some would call it a sex comedy or an adult comedy we feel the film looks first & foremost a situational comedy. The subject of the film looks very much suitable in today’s times. The performances look good.

Manmeet Pem, Kushal Badrike, Shashikant Kerkar & Bhau Kadam all look in top form. After the success of ‘Boyz’ this genre seems to be very bankable for Marathi cinema. It would be interesting to see if the film goes in the depth of the subject & the trailer hints us that there’s a possibility! Manmeet Pem would certainly be the main attraction of this film & after giving an intense performance in last year’s ‘Kachcha Limbu’!

The film releases on 23^rd February & the songs & the trailer of the film are already catching the fancy of younger audiences & they are trending on the social media too!

Kachcha Limbu Marathi Movie Review :

A few years ago when Ravi Jadhav directorial ‘Balak Palak’ became a super hit, suddenly the whole of Bollywood & others recognized Marathi cinema as an industry that is not afraid to take on bold subjects. Yes the variety of subjects that Marathi cinema has dealt with in the past decade or so is definitely commendable, but that the proficiency & craftsmanship that is necessary to make good films on these subjects hasn’t been seen in Marathi. There have been exceptions & Prasad Oak’s directorial debut ‘Kachha Limbu’ is certainly a very ‘special’ exception.

Straight from the decision of casting Ravi Jadhav as ‘Mohan Katdare’ & keeping the major part of the film black & white, Prasad Oak has hit a six! The film is based on a novel by legendary Marathi writer Jaywant Dalvi. Dalvi also wrote a play based on the same novel. The play that was staged on commercial stage of Marathi theatre! The point is that back then ‘Commercial Marathi Theatre’ was so much ahead of other popular things happening in performing arts in India!

Mohan Katdare (Ravi Jadhav) & Sheila Katdare (Sonali Kulkarni) are parents to a special child ‘Bachhu’ (played masterfully by Manmeet Pem). They both work in opposite day & night shifts & hence they hardly have any time together. Sheila’s boss Mr. Pandit (played by the Man in Form Sachin Khedekar) is considerate about Sheila when he comes to know about her child. Mohan’s colleague ‘Venkat’ who lost his young child (Anant Mahadevan, another interesting casting decision) has a fondness for ‘Bachhu’. This is it, this is the world of ‘Kachha Limbu’. Pretty much confined as the world of Mohan & Sheila.

The film is difficult to watch (in a good & heart-breaking way) at many instances, but I would request the audiences to give it a chance, be there for the final point this film wants to make & trust me it’s satisfying & uplifting. Throughout the journey of ‘Kachha Limbu’ there’s always a moral uncertainty that keeps playing in our mind, whether it’s Sheila’s relation with her boss Mr. Pandit or Bachhu’s antics that might imbibe hate or outright sympathy.

Prasad Oak avoids any kind of melodrama or over the top style, he is consistently specific about what exactly he wants in every scene, every frame, to convey to the audience. The cinematographer of the film deserves equal credit & so does Rahul Ranade who has done the background score for the film. All the actors are author-backed! Manmeet especially is outstanding & so is Sachin Khedekar with his minimalist perfection (a trait he seems to have mastered post Rajwade & Sons, Muramba). Ravi Jadhav is a casting masterstroke & he doesn’t disappoint too, same is the case with Sonali Kulkarni.

The original novel by Jaywant Dalvi deserves at least 50% of the credit for this film. It also makes a point that Marathi filmmakers should keep exploring Marathi literature through this medium. The film has a different ending than the novel/play & is brilliantly justified. There are instances, especially in the second half where we keep acknowledging Prasad Oak’s braveness to actually include certain scenes & that with too with immaculate use of symbolism. Along with Prasad screenwriter Chinmay Mandlekar too deserves a mention for keeping the whole journey so to the point & specific.

Overall:

‘Kachha Limbu’ has an ‘A’ certificate, so that justifies why certain audiences should stay away from this film, having said that it still doesn’t disqualify as a family movie. Yes it’s one mighty impactful experience that breaks almost all borders of boldness that were present in our film, but not for the sake of it! It justifies by telling us what exactly lies beyond the boldness, & that is something essentially humane.

Prasad Oak was once in a meeting with Ravi Jadhav, when he noticed Ravi Jadhav’s beard, instantly Prasad was sure was that Ravi Jadhav is perfect as ‘Mohan Katdare’ in his ‘Kachha Limbu’ film.

3) The Accurate Ensemble Cast that includes Greats Sonali Kulkarni & Sachin Khedekar

Along with Ravi Jadhav the ensemble cast of ‘Kachha Limbu’ includes Sonali Kulkarni, Sachin Khedekar, Anant Mahadevan & Manmeet Pem. Here the decision of casting Ravi Jadhav & Manmeet Pem as father & son seems so spot-on. Both look perfectly suitable in their parts & even Sonali Kulkarni seems to have developed perfect chemistry with them. Sachin Khedekar’s part too is very important as its evident from the trailer!

4) The Story & Screenplay 

‘Kachha Limbu’ is based on a play written by legendary Marathi writer/playwright Jaywant Dalvi. Jaywant Dalvi was known to be a writer who was ahead of its time. Moreover the adaptation of this play to the screen has been one of the most versatile artists in Marathi today, Chinmay Mandlekar! Chinmay has written the screenplay & dialogues for ‘Kachha Limbu’.

5) The Boldness of the Subject

The subject of ‘Kaccha Limbu’ is very complex has different shades that are visible in the trailer itself. It’s not just the story of parents who have a specially challenged child, but it’s also about two people the father & mother who have lived a sexually, mentally oppressed life for years to take care of their child.

6) Prasad Oak’s Directorial Debut

Prasad Oak is well-known for playing different types of characters on the screen television & also on stage. He has also proved is singing skills many a times. Ever since the posters & teasers of Prasad Oak directorial ‘Kaccha Limbu’ has been out it has unarguably become the most awaited Marathi film of 2017. Director Prasad Oak seems to be presenting us a sensitive film. The black and white motion teaser of his directorial venture Kaccha Limbu is fabulous. Ravi Jadhav and Sonali Kulkarni look amazing as a middle class couple. Sachin Khedekar is once again brilliant as Sonali’s boss. Manmeet Pem plays role of a teenager boy with an exceptionally great caliber. The motion teaser has been done exceptionally good and the overall look has been maintained as per the sensitivity of the subject.

The subject of this film deals with a sensitive issue of a mentally challenged boy, and how the parents suffer. The original story has been written by legendary Marathi write Jaywant Dalvi and story-screenplay is by Chinmay Mandlekar. The music for this film has been composed by Rahul Ranade.

This is an acting debut for Ravi Jadhav. After giving us superhit films like Natrang and Timepass, Ravi has decided to come in front of the camera. He and Manmeet have a great deal of resemblance and they are convincing as father-son. Sonali is brilliant as usual. The teaser has been cut very smartly and gives just a enough glimpse about the plot and the characters.
