Aamhi Doghi Marathi Movie Review:

‘Aamhi Doghi’ is based on a story by writer Gauri Deshpande. Not a lengthy novel but a compact 12 page story. However the time frame of the film (& the story) is larger & covers a span of around 10-12 years. The title of the film is a bit misleading as the film is more of an individual’s journey in the crucial years of her life. ‘Savitri’ or ‘Savi’ played by Priya Bapat is that individual & also the narrator of the film. She warns us both at the beginning & at the end of the film that since she’s the narrator she would always be in the foreground by force & in the background lies her step mother ‘Amla’ or ‘Ammi’ played by Mukta Barve. This isn’t a huge issue but I must warn Mukta Barve fans that she won’t have a lot of screen time, though her character is still essentially important to the film.

Priya Bapat Mukta Barve Aamhi Doghi Movie Photos

Equally important is Savi’s father ‘Appa’ played by the mighty effective Kiran Karmarkar. Even the rest of the cast that includes Savi’s friends, colleagues, & her love interest are important to the story in their own little ways. Savi is unlike any female protagonists we’ve seen in Marathi cinema. She represents the independent woman of today’s age & not in a caricature-like way. In a way this is the biographical story of Savi’s life & how she groomed herself to become the independent woman of today’s age. ‘Appa’ is the opposing force in her life & he consciously groomed her to become a lot like himself. But from her teenage years Savi didn’t feel the need to let ‘Appa’ decide for her, the first moment of Savi’s journey towards attaining independence begins here, enters ‘Ammi’ Appa’s newly-wed wife only 7-8 years older than Savi, n exact opposite of Savi in every way. Savi grew up without a mother & adapted herself accordingly. Ammi meets Savi at a point where Savi isn’t searching for a mother. Savi has a best friend already! So how & why does she connect with Ammi? She does, but how & why needs to be seen in the film.

Now the problem with this first half that deals with Savi’s teenage years is that the film doesn’t bother much to create a period in which things are happening. Since the story begins with a flashback, building a period is very essential to capture the realness of the lives of those people. The visual tone of the film too remains bland throughout. The good thing is that the film gives scope to silence! It doesn’t spoon feed the audience by bombarding loud background score telling them what to feel all the time. By the end of the first half we are unconvinced about Mukta Barve’s existence in the film. But later in the second half her character returns to give the defining meaning to the film. A meaning that shapes the whole film & Savi’s conflict in a completely different way! It gives a lot of food for thought to the audiences after they leave the cinema hall.

Mukta Barve In Aamhi Doghi Photos

Priya Bapat as Savi is extraordinary & extremely real. There’s an inherent softness in her that actually would go opposite to the character of Savi, but instead that softness blends in with Savi’s toughness to give a much more believable portrait of a strong independent woman! Mukta Barve would have easily been a more obvious choice to this role but Priya Bapat brings in an x-factor! Mukta Barve too shines in a role that will linger for a long time in our memory even with limited screen time. Bhushan Pradhan for the first time seemed into the skin of his character! He plays ‘Ram’ who tells Savi in their very first meet that Rahul Dravid is his idol in every way! ‘Ram’ (in another way an ideal ‘man’ or ‘husband material’) does represent ‘Rahul Dravid’ himself or should we say vice-versa!

Overall:

Aamhi Doghi’ could have been better directed for sure but it still works beautifully. The strength of the original story & Priya Bapat’s lively ‘Savi’ makes ‘Amhi Doghi’ a must watch for all kinds of audiences especially the family audiences!

Family Katta Marathi Movie Review :

Long back Maharashtra’s greatest playwright Vijay Tendulkar wrote an unusually simplistic play, “Madhlya Bhinti”. Simplistic because it was nothing like his other works. There were hardly any metaphors or something offensively violent for which he was known. Even in the sense of realism the play didn’t have much to offer. Though what it offered was a voice to the usual awkward silences. These silences can creep into any random middle class (& upper middle) family. People living in the same house hardly speak their hearts out. But a play is the correct medium for this outlet. Technically a film might not be the suitable medium for such an outburst. Family Katta is a remake of ‘Celebration” (a Marathi play by the same team) & it’s a welcome exception. The characters speak their heart out without sounding loud or animated. No they are not bombarding melodramatic monologues or glorifying the traditional concept of a big happy family. Instead their outburst appears completely genuine & non-theatrical.

So in Family Katta the whole family isn’t living together & doesn’t even consider doing so at any point, which is appreciable & path-breaking to much extent. Vandana Gupte & Dilip Prabhawalkar play the elderly couple (Mr. & Mrs. Sabnis) who are the central characters of this film. Their three sons (Kiran Karmarkar, Sanjay Khapre & Sachin Deshpande) are living in different cities & their grand kids (Alok Rajwade & Gauri Nalawade) too are well-settled in their respective careers. The fourth child, Manju (Sai Tamhankar) is somewhat disconnected from the family as she ran away with her lover during her college days. Manju is particularly a father’s daughter & her father was the hero of her life. This additional info has a unique context in the film& works pretty well. Manju has been forgiven by her mother but not by her father.

Family Katta (2016) - Marathi Movie Cast Wiki Photos Trailer Release Date, Family Katta Film IMDB Casting Images Poster Actors ActressAlike last year’s Rajwade & Sons, Family Katta too uses the third generation as an ideal model for the generation that went wrong, the middle one (the four children). Though it’s pretty much debatable that no matter what it’s always the middle generation that’ll take all the beating (that’s what Rajwade & Sons stressed on & Family Katta didn’t). Sadly none of the two films ever propagated that this whole process is a cycle & will keep repeating itself till the end of time.

However Family Katta stresses on more simplistic topics & succeeds in propagating them efficiently. The first half focuses on the little treasures of human life. Those we all have an easy access to yet we all take them for granted. Even our quarrels are most of the times on so little issues. The first half is filled with many such minute moments & its positivity reaches the audiences. The second half has a potential satirical tone to it but it wasn’t explored much. It might be a conscious decision by the makers to not go that way. But the path they chose still help them in reaching the desired destination.

After Dusri Goshta it’s good to see Chandrakant Kulkarni getting over his political hangover. We now expect many such genres to be explored by him on the silver screen. Vandana Gupte has given her most smashing performance on the big screen. If she was exceptional in Double Seat & Maatichya Chuli, here she is unmatchable! Dilip Prabhawalkar as usual gives a refreshing performance & doesn’t remind us of any of his previous roles. Among the rest of the cast the two animated daughter-in-laws (Pratiksha Lonkar & Sulekha Talwalkar) have the most obvious cliché characters, yet they generate humour. Pratiksha Lonkar doesn’t really have a history of playing such characters before& it becomes quite evident but Sulekha Talwalkar is smooth in her antics!

Family Katta can be straight forwardly slotted into the A-list category of Marathi films but somewhere we feel what if the film was a little more ambitious towards defining the meaning of life in its own way through the humans it had in it, just a little more?

Overall:

Family Katta is the need of this hour, predominantly because we (Indian film viewers) deserve the right family film which is not bounded by age old ideas of how an Indian family lives happily ever after. Yet what it propagates is that even with our differences & personal spaces we should still manage to be connected to each other & react sensitively towards each other as for the long time the big differences become irrelevant & what stays are those little treasures!

As the title of the film suggests this is a family drama involving relationships and misunderstandings of the family members. This is a story of a Sabnis family where most members are staying away from the family. The senior couple of the family played by Dilip Prabhavalkar and Vandana Gupte invites family members to celebrate 50th wedding anniversary. The highlight of the teaser is the old photographs of the star cast. It is amazing and immediately revokes nostalgia for every age group.

Kanha Marathi Movie Review :

Avdhoot Gupte’s Kanha is built on the same template as that of Morya. At the backdrop of a Hindu festival (Gokulashtami in this case) two factions are involved in a game of one-upmanship that turns ugly due to political interference. Morya did have issues, but the plot, which felt novel back then, kept you engaged. Kanha has the same issues as Morya and the generously borrowed plot adds to the misery of watching the film.

The Govinda troupe of Jai Ekta lead by Raghu (Gashmir Mahajani) have the world record of building the highest human pyramid of nine layers to their name. Post that feat a court order restricting the height of the human pyramid meant that no other group now has the chance of eclipsing their world record, much to the frustration of the rival group of Jai Bajrang lead by Malhar (Vaibhav Tatvawadi).

Raghu resting on the past laurels of his Jai Ekta troupe, never misses an opportunity to humiliate Malhar. At a pre Dahi Handi event, in the spur of a moment, Malhar’s Jai Bajrang troupe manages to equal the world record. Local politician Shivajirao (Prasad Oak) witnesses this and manages to convince Malhar to repeat the feat, despite it being illegal, at the main Dahi Handi event organised by him. Raghu’s mentor (Kiran Karmarkar) meanwhile aspires to stand for the local elections and wants to make the most of the Dahi Handi festivities. Interference of politicians turn things ugly. Those who have seen Morya can predict how the film will end from miles away.

Kanha tries to put forward an argument of considering the competition between Govind troupes to break the Dahi Handi as a sport. But the argument is so weak and laughable that you just can’t take it seriously. Quite like Morya, the characters here also have a tendency to go on long preachy monologues. In one such monologue by Malhar, the cap on the height of the human pyramids is considered as a discouragement to compete in Dahi Handi competitions. The character then, much to our bewilderment, asks if Sachin Tendulkar would have become the world beater that he was if there ever was a cap on the highest number of runs scored in Test cricket after Gavaskar set that record. Such an absolutely illogical comparison does a great disservice to the basic idea of considering Dahi Handi as a sport.

Kanha does manage to grip you in the beginning of the first half despite the overbearing ‘been there, done that’ feeling. The whole world of the chawls with the boys and girls prepping hard for the Dahi handi is drawn up in a fairly engaging manner. But besides this the screenplay is rather shoddy. Save for Malhar, the characters are either cardboards or caricatures. We don’t care much for any character. Sub-plots are hastily abandoned and the climax lacks the necessary punch.

Avadhoot Gupte’s soundtrack for the film also doesn’t create much of an impact, either. The songs sometimes feel forcibly inserted into the film and are an obstacle for the narrative to move forward.

Feminists would also be up in arms with the film as it seems to condone regressive ideas. The love interest of Malhar played by Gauri Nalawade blames a girl for perverse behavior of men. Her crime being – wanting a slim figure. Gauri’s character thinks that men get the license to harass women on the streets, just because a few girls want a toned body to attract the opposite sex. It is a classic case of condoning the ‘men will be men’ mindset. Not to mention that Gauri Nalawade is terribly miscast and looks very awkward in the role of a girl who prefers to sweat it out in the gym than spend hours in the saloon.

Gashmir Mahajani is Marathi cinema’s answer to John Abraham – a muscular hunk (the film objectifies his body generously), but just cannot express with his face; his dialogue delivery is comparatively better, though. It is Vaibhav Tatwawadi in the lead role of Malhar who saves the day. Vaibhav has grown to become a reliable actor with a good screen presence. He gets the most screen time and his performance is what makes the film watchable. Vaibhav is the rare actor from the new crop who shows promise to carry a commercial film entirely on his shoulder in the near future.

Overall:

A heavily borrowed plot from Morya makes the proceedings, especially in the second half, rather dull. Apart from Vaibhav Tatwawadi’s performance, the film has little else to recommend.

Kanha is getting ready for the Gokul ashtami release. The new song Krishna Janmala goes very well with the title of the film. The song is composed and sung by Avadhoot Gupte. The female part has been sung by Sonu Kakkar and Vaishali Samant.

The song has an upbeat dandiya feel to it and narrates the story of Lord Krishna’s birth. The song has been picturized on Vaibhav Tattwavadi and Gauri Nalawade. The highlight of the song is Umesh Jadhav’s choreography. It has very good use of the traditional Dandiya steps with a modern twist.  His dance movements are very energetic yet the slow pace of the song is not lost. The song surely has a tremendous Dahi Handi and Navaratri appeal.

Kanha, a film directed by Avadhoot Gupte is about a Dahi Handi group and stars Vaibhav Tattvavadi and Gashemeer Mahajani in the lead roles. The film will be releasing on 26 August all over Maharashtra.

Mitra Marathi Song From Avdhoot Gupte’s Upcoming Marathi Movie Kanha :Gokulashtami is around the corner and Avadhoot Gupte has brought a fresh sizzling song for this festival. Composed by Avadhoot and sung by Adarsh Shinde and Rohit Raut, Mitra is a perfect song to dance on the occasion of Dahi Handi. The song is from the film Kanha, as the name suggests, the film is about Gokulashtami and the competition between two Govinda pathaks to construct the tallest human pyramid.

The song has been picturized on Gashmeer Mahajani and Vaibhav Tatwavadi. Gashmeer is a fabulous dancer and a song like this gives him a wonderful opportunity to showcase his talent. His steps have been choreographed well and he executed them brilliantly. Though, Vaibhav is not as good dancer as Gashmeer yet his fresh screen presence and energetic dancing looks very great. The song presents that marvelous spirit of Mumbai Chaal where Dahi Handi is celebrated in true style.

This will be the third film is directed by Avadhoot Gupte (after Zenda and Morya). The film also stars Gauri Nalawade, Prasad Oak, Kiran Karmarkar and child actor Sumedh Vani. The film is ready to release on 26 August.
