Review:

Lai Bhaari last year marked the first time a Tamil/Telugu kind of a larger than life film becoming successful in marathi cinema. It was only a matter of time that the success of Lai Bhaari would be tried to be replicated. So, here comes Guru – a film with all the essential elements of a commercial potboiler a le south style.

Guru (Ankush Chaudhary), is a swindler who is in the ‘business of spare parts’ in Mumbai. Once while being chased by the police he witnesses a murder and the influential people involved in the murder force him to leave to his native place where his older brother, an upright man, still resides with his family. The villagers of his native place are under the threat of being forcefully evicted to make way for a ‘Mega City’ being planned on their land. A local advocate, along with Guru’s brother, vehemently oppose this project and firmly stand in the way of it. The advocate is bumped off and Guru’s brother attacked. Needless to mention, Guru comes to the rescue of the village and his brother, and what follows is anybody’s guess.

Ankush Chaudhary in the lead role is the best part about the film. He plays Guru with an undeniable charm and the role seems tailor made for him. Be it the actions scenes or the comic punches, Ankush adds his own flavor to it all. Murli Sharma as the menacing local politician hell bent grabbing the land of the villagers for the ‘mega city’ is also impressive. However, apart from these two you will be hard pressed to find anything appreciable about the film. The film might be sound on the technical side but the action scenes; the humour; the typical village belle who falls in love with the hero; all of it is so done to death that you struggle to find any originality in the film. Most of the punch lines like ‘Ghai hi vinashachi aai’ are lame and fall flat.

And what is with the ear deafening background score? My ears were buzzing with the extremely loud background score long after I was done with the screening. Many times the loud background score kills the tension that is being built in the scene. The effort to give Guru a particular garish look works, but the same cannot be said of the female lead played by Urmila Kanitkar; her make-up is so bright that it literally blinds us and we are left incapable of appreciating any other aspect of her performance.

Overall:

Guru is not much different than the many South films and their Hindi remakes that we have been subjected to in the last decade or so. Ankush Chaudhary in the lead role is what makes the film watchable.

Explain the character of Mango Dolly from Guru Movie.

Mango Dolly is shy but at the same time she is a dashing character that laughs while talking and eats while laughing.  She is having all filmy adaa. Thus this is a full of joy character.

Do Mango Dolly and Urmila Kanetkar have the same personality?

Mango Dolly’s character inspired by myself (Laughs). Mango Dolly is similar to my nature, look wise we are different but nature wise we both are similar. I am also sensitive.

Tell us special adaa of Mango Dolly.

She is colorful in her dressing & nature and she is multitalented.

Till now you have played all your characters in sober and light make-up but now how you feel with colorful-bright-different make-up?

This is new experiment for me. We cannot always present ourselves in this bright make-up and colorful costumes; but everybody wants to be such colorful at some time. I got this chance by playing the Mango Dolly Character.

What are your first expressions when you got a script of Guru?

I have never played this type of character before in my any movies so I was excited with the colors of this character and beauty from inside and outside.

How you feel working with director Sanjay Jadhav after Duniyadari and Pyar Wali Love Story?

This character is different from my all earlier characters. But Sanjay Dada believed in me and after Duniyadari and Pyar Wali Love Story, again it was great experience working with Sanjay Dada.

‘Filmy Filmy…’ song was penned by Kshitij Patwardhan who worked with Sanjay Jadhav for the first time, music composed by director Pankaj Padghan and sung by Vijay Prakash. Music Director Pankaj Padghan expressed himself as, ‘this song is very special for me as Sanjay Dada liked the composition in first glance and it has Romantic genre. Guru’s title song represent Ankush Chaudhary as very Dashing and Tadak Fadak but ‘filmy filmy’ is completely opposite as guru should look romantic in this song.’ Use of seven kind of musical instruments, filmy style of Ankush & Urmila, beautiful choreography, all these things made this song very special. Very talented Umesh Jadhav has choreographed this song.

While talking about the experience, Umesh Jadhav said, “When Sanjay Jadhav called me for meet he explained me the situation of song that it is very filmy kind of song and he asked me to choreograph in same way. I tried to picturized the song as it is picturized in the mind of Sanjay Jadhav & when I saw this on screen today I feel so happy. I choreographed around 100 numbers of songs but this song gave tremendous joy to me.”

Dialogues of this film penned by Ashish Pathre while expressing his feeling he said, “Audiences started liking dialogues of Guru and I give complete credit to Sanjay Dada. After so many meetings & Sittings he taught me very small things so I could write such good dialogues.”
