Redu‘ movie has been in talks long before it’s trailer being revealed. The director of the film & the film itself has been awarded with quite a few prestigious awards. And now when we watch the trailer we understand the reason behind it! This film revolves around a very simple yet effective story.

The innocence of the ‘Konkani Manoos’ especially in the old times before the technological advancements can be seen in this trailer. We have all heard stories about how ‘Radio’ being the first ever digital medium of entertainment became extremely close to people’s heart. ‘Redu’ seems to tell something more beyond this nostalgic feeling!

Shashank Shende who is usually seen in serious roles seems to be having great fun here! He has become one of Marathi cinema’s favorite go to man in recent times especially for stories with a rural backdrop. Here though he is playing a Konkani man which we haven’t seen him play before!

Lost and Found Marathi Movie Review :

There is a scene in the later parts of the film, when a couple are having a romantic date. Both of them are fond of each other and they know it.The conversation then carries forward very casually to their marriage. There is no fancy proposal from either of them. Just a playful, matter of factness in their chat,as they first time broach the subject of their marriage. It is a refreshing treatment to a scene that has been done to death till now.How i wish the rest of the film was able to side-step cliches this way!

Lost and Found is about the four main characters Maruti (Mangesh Desai), Kaka (Mohan Agashe), Naina (Spruha Joshi) and Manas (Siddharth Chandekar) finding love after they have lost it, and that is why the title of the film. But it is also about loneliness and how it has become a common factor in urban India, where people just don’t simply seemto have time for one another. Firstly, it is not a plot that has been unexplored and the weakscreenplaymakesit a rather dull affair.

Kaka, Manas and Maruti begin a support-group called the anti-loneliness program (ALP)as they realise through personal experience that people going through an emotional crisis just need a patient ear to pour their hearts out to, more than anything else. Through this program they plan to reach out to people and give them company and emotional support. Predictably, as the characters go about lending a patient ear to someone they get healed emotionally themselves by finding love in the people they meet or among the volunteers of the support group itself.

Spruha Joshi & Siddharth Chandekar - Lost and Found Marathi movieThe treatment to the film is also as dull as the plot. The film is full of done to death lonely-father-abandoned-by-sonlike scenes, or a character of a young lady abandoned by her husband. Basically, Lost and Found tries to make you cry by identifying with loneliness of the people, but doesn’t quite find any success. Not to mention the amateurish way in which the whole functioning of the ALP is shown.

The performances by the main actors is what makes the proceedings watchable. Mohan Agashe bring out a few laughs courtsey his character of a happy-go-lucky single old man. Siddharth and Spruha play themselves, but they suit the character. Whatever little emotional connect Lost and Found makes must be credited to Mangesh Desai’s performance as Maruti. He is by far the most convincing of the cast as the man who has taken to drinks due to a tragic marriage, but later finds love among one of the women who contact ALP.

Overall:

A cliche-ridden film with a weak screenplay that makes very little emotional connect.

Kapus Kondyachi Goshta Marathi Movie Review:

A peculiar thing about this Friday’s Marathi releases is the common cast and crew. Both films are written by Prasad Namjoshi. Both of them have Makarand Anaspure, Bharat Ganeshpure and Gauri Konge. They are also set in rural Vidarbha and deal with the conditions of the impoverished farmers of that region. However, this film is directed by Mrunalini Bhosale, whereas Rangaa Patanga was written and directed by Prasad Namjoshi. And there is where the difference between two lies. That difference is glaring.

Kapus Kondyachi GoshtRangaa Patangaa for the most part was well directed and side stepped of clichés. Also, what Kapus Kondyachi Goshta lacked was a crew like Rangaa Patangaa. Bhosale’s film comes across as techinically deficient and that ends up being its biggest negative.

Jyoti, Chanda, Ratna and Bali are troubled by the villagers after the untimely demise of their father. The oldest Jyoti decides to quit college and pursue farming. Her other sisters also decide to lend her a helping hand. Farming is mainly considered to be a man’s job. But these four sisters face all odds bravely and stick to farming. Advocate Pawde becomes their pillar of support and stands behind the girls in every crisis.

Now, the story here is predictable. From the beginning we have a feeling that the film is going to be about the triumph of women against the misogynistic society. Add to that the way the lack of a grip the story has over you. The acting here is uneven. Samidha Guru has good screen presence but you cannot help feeling something urban about her demeanor. Makarand Anaspure who was mighty impressive in Rangaa Patangaa isn’t as effective here, probably because of his character.

Though there is no denying the noble intentions of the director, one cannot help feeling that a more capable director might have done more justice to the story which is based on a true incident. The technical side of the film comes across as weak and isn’t successful in putting across the inspiring story with the desired impact.

    Overall:

Well intentioned, but lacks a deft hand in direction. The weak technical side also hampers the film.

    Rangaa Patangaa Marathi Movie Review:

Rangaa Patangaa is a film of two different halves. Like so many films made in our country it suffers from the second half syndrome. The film promises a genuinely well-made film at the interval point, however, much of that promise is not lived up to by the film in the second half, especially with that contrived ending.

Makarand Anaspure - Ranga Patanga Marathi Movie‘Mere Ranga-Patanga jhapadna mangta hain’, we hear a man saying these words to a police officer in the opening scene of the film. Visibly Muslim, the man has adopted a forlorn demeanor that the peasants of our society naturally adopt in front of a government authority. The police officer after casually making a few usual religiously bigoted remarks throws the man named Jumman (Makarand Anaspure) out of his police station as he is aghast at the knowledge that Ranga-Patanga are not the peasant’s children but his two bulls. He also threatens ‘to make a bull out of him’ if he comes into the police station again with that sort of a complaint as he is already inundated with a lot of work. And with that the rest of the film follows Jumman on his search for his two bulls whom he has reared like his own children.

The first half raised my hopes quite high. In the recent past Marathi cinema has developed a reputation for coming up with a few gem of films every year. These gems tell a fresh, rooted tale and also many times push the envelope. Ranga-Patanga had all the making of such a film. The most notable thing about the film is the humour. Despite the plot not being rather upbeat, there are numerous humourous situations in the early half. All of them feel organic to the setting and they are certainly the high points of the screenplay. The humour here is gentle, quirky and slapstick, all at the same time and still that lingering sense of loss that Jumman feels is not lost on the viewer; such skillful direction is a rarity.

Sandeep Pathak - Ranga Patanga Marathi MovieThen it is the earthiness of the film that works like a charm. It is set in the arid Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and the characters, the language they speak all come across as very authentic. The top quality of acting by the leads is also crucial to the humour and earthiness. Makarand Anaspure who is a star in his own right gives a display of how underused an actor he is. He underplays his part to great effect and is mighty successful in bringing out the turmoil in the mind of the childless farmer whose two bulls whom he has reared like his children have gone missing. Sandeep Pathak too shines in his role as his mischievous and street smart childhood friend, bringing just the right amount of humour into play.

Amol Gole’s evocative camerawork makes Vidarbha a character in itself here. For once, a marathi film manages to get its background score right and Kaushal Inamdar should be lauded for it and also the moving song in the film with some great lyrics.

Ranga Patanga Marathi Movie PosterHowever, after the interval point it all starts taking somewhat of a dip. The film enters the Peepli Live territory of media exploiting the crisis in hand which is quite done to death by now, to be honest. The humour becomes typical, the acting by the supporting cast ordinary. The freshness that the film had in the first half starts to vanish as the screenplay covers grounds that has already been explored in other films. But, this detour into how the media reacts to the Jumman’s crisis doesn’t hurt the film as much as the finale, though.

The end of the film is quite contrived. I was left rather disappointed by the unconvincing and contrived ending as the film has so many things going for it. It seems as if the end has been purposefully concocted keeping the commercial interests in mind. The finale somewhat dampens what could have been a genuinely good film that one can praise without any reservations.

    Overall:

Well-acted, humourous and rooted Rangaa Patangaa has a promising first half. But the second half doesn’t live up to expectations and ends in a contrived and unconvincing manner spoiling what could have been a genuinely good film. It is still eminently watchable, though.
