Story Outline :

Not all the time thinks are sweet or hunky-dory, there will be a few problems, misunderstandings, difference of opinion in between people in love. That angle too will be delicately discovered in Zee Yuva’s ‘Prem He’.

Sachin Kundalkar’s Vazandar makes an amazing entry on the box office. As the title suggests, the film is about two girls who are over-weight. Our industry always seems to make fun of such people. However, Kundalkar takes a very different approach to this matter. Sai Tamhankar has known for her curvy yet maintained figure. For this film, she has gained some kilos! We spoke with this true glamour diva about what makes her choose such films and what is her fitness mantra. Here are some excerpts from this interview.

You seem to be taking a different approach towards your career. What prompted you to choose such different roles (Family Katta, Balasaheb, Vazandar etc)?

I think motivation lies in the word ‘different’. ‘To be different’ is my biggest motivation. I try and be different in every film and fortunately I’m being approached for different characters, nothing could have been better than this. So when the character is different, out of the box, challenging and something which I haven’t done before that attracts me the most and that’s how I end up choosing different roles.

Gaining a weight is not quite easy. How did you lose so much weight? What is your fitness mantra?

Patience and Time is the mantra. I’m still losing weight for the ideal weight that I want to be in. It took me 8 months to lose the weight that I had gained and I’m still in the process to lose it. Definitely gaining weight and losing weight, both are difficult and mentally challenging procedures. Gaining weight and then again losing weight has taught me a lot and has changed as a person. I have embraced that change very gladly and now I’m comfortable with my body no matter what size I’m. I have started loving myself more.

You have also taken an interest in film-making recently. Would you be directing or producing in near future?

Not really in film making. I assisted the Art department for Vazandar. Yes I’m continuously exploring different areas related to my field. I don’t know whether I will be producing or directing in the near future. But I’m thinking of producing Hindi plays. Let’s see how and when it happens.

How was your experience working with Priya Bapat and Sachin Kundalkar?

It was extremely enriching. Sachin is one of those very few directors who has got a great sense of aesthetics, color pallets and flavours and Priya is one of the most hardworking and sincere co-actor I have ever come across. I have learnt a lot from her and it was quite pleasant working with both of them.

What are your next projects?

The projects coming up in 2017 which I’m looking forward to are Love Sonia and Rakshas. Love Sonia is the international film which I’m a part of and Rakshas is a Marathi film and the script of this film was selected for the Drishyam Sundance Writers’ Lab. So these are the two projects which I’m looking forward to the most.

You have done a film like Hunterrr in Hindi. When we will be seeing you again in Hindi films.

Love Sonia film is partly Hindi and English.

Vazandar Marathi Movie Review :

Post ‘Aiyaa’ (2012) (director Sachin Kundalkar’s first Bollywood film) there is a conscious change in  Kundalkar’s choice of subject & the execution of it. Sachin Kundalkar’s brand image before ‘Aiyaa’ was quintessentially “Art House”. With films like ‘Restaurant’, ‘Nirop’ & the masterpiece ‘Gandh’ it could have been almost impossible to predict a Bollywood debut like ‘Aiyaa’. But post that Kundalkar came back to Marathi with ‘Happy Journey’, ‘Rajwade & Sons’ & now ‘Vazandar’. There’s a lot common in these three films. Apart from the common target audience it’s the deliberate effort on the overall ‘Youthful’ look of these films. It’s difficult to find the traditional ‘Marathiness’ in these works both visually & thematically. ‘Rajwade & Sons’ though was more complex & the perceptions were not restricted to the younger generation.

So the point is ‘Vazandar’ revolves strictly around today’s internet struck generation & to some extent might not appeal to the traditional audience of Marathi Cinema(if there’s any!).

As the trailer clearly suggests the film is completely focused on the lives of two slightly overweight girls; Pooja (Priya Bapat) & Kaveri (Sai Tamhankar). Kaveri married into a wealthy family & Pooja is in her early 20s still studying. Both of them live in Panchgani & are friends. Pooja is a sort of the only company Kaveri has who lives a different life at home; that of a sophisticated Marathi bride. Priya Bapat as Pooja is genuinely adorable & spontaneous but it’s Sai’s Kaveri to whom the film really belongs. The situations these two characters are put into might be same but their journeys are strangely distant from each other. Hence the point of having two protagonists in this film isn’t justified. Since the film deals with a slightly under used issue we expect the film to be morally clear but that’s not the case.

Even with these drawbacks ‘Vazandar’ appeals to us mainly because it believes in the people it’s dealing with. Yes they appear genuine, unfilmy & alive. Both Sai & Priya are natural throughout & it definitely elevates the impact of the film. Among the rest of the cast Siddharth Chandekar is smooth as usual but Chirag Patil appears awkward. Mainly because he shares screen space with the flawless Sai Tamhankar & so his immaturity is evident throughout.

If we have to classify ‘Vazandar’ in a genre it would be like a light hearted Hollywood film which we usually watch on a tv channel that specifically telecasts romantic comedies. Is there any sort of a strong statement or a counterview which the over-weight individuals can proudly flaunt? No. Not really. Then what’s the point? Well it’s still a good film, because we can’t really expect films to give us philosophical solutions to every day-to-day issues of modern human life.

Sachin Kundalkar recently spoke about how currently the Marathi film industry is allowing filmmakers to make mistakes & a kind of freedom to command his/her actors according to his vision. The second part of this statement has been justified in ‘Vazandar’ but in terms of the first, the film appears much safer & it doesn’t really explore the freedom to commit mistakes. But I repeat ‘Vazandar’ is a good film! It’s just that we expect more deeper & complex films from a director who gave us ‘Gandh’.

Now the other side of the coin makes us question ourselves whether we truly have the kind of audience ‘Vazandar’ aspires? We don’t know! This year has only belonged to the one big blockbuster & there aren’t many glory tales to narrate. Still to be positive we guess this time the “Youth” recognizes ‘Vazandar’ which is definitely relatable to them at least on ‘culture’ grounds.

Overall:

Watch ‘Vazandar’ for three reasons Sai Tamhankar, Priya Bapat & the overall ‘Youthful’ flavor of the film. You might also love more things about the film which will then be a bonus!

Very few times a song genuinely takes the story forward in a film. Sachin Kundalkar’s Vazandar is a fun take on obese individuals & how the world perceive them. In the trailer itself we were made aware that a video clip starring the two heavyweight leads (Priya Bapat & Sai Tamhankar) becomes viral & then causes them embarrassment & thus establishing a conflict in the film.

Sai Tamhankar has made it to a level that she is been considered as the megastar of the Marathi Film Industry. Leaving her bold and beautiful image behind, in her past few movies Sai had done roles of different shades. Be it old-fashioned Parnarekha from YZ, or Karishma from Jaundyana Balasaheb or a serious character of Manju from Family Katta, Sai has given total justice to all these characters. For her upcoming film Vazandar, Sai as a responsible actress has gone a step further and taken part in the work done behind the camera.

When the other cast including Priya were shooting, Sai was actually roaming around the sets with the walky-talky and was instructing the Assistant directors and even blocking the crowd at one point.The onlookers were surprised and confused when they saw Sai working behind the camera. Enjoying the confusion in the eyes of the onlookers Sai said, “People passing by were really confused when they saw me working behind the camera. I understood how much patience one need to have while working behind the camera, how the on set work gets affected due to starry tantrums. Be it Art Direction or Assistant Direction, I did not do it to achieve anything but because of this work I played major roles onscreen and off-screen too. And this experience taught me a lot.”

Though she got a break of 3 days from the shoot, Sai did not rest but she preferred to spend her time on the sets of Vazandar. Sai gave a thought of how she can work towards smooth and quick completion of the shooting process, hence she worked in Assistant direction and Art direction departments.  After the pack up Sai used to sit with the assistant directors and discuss  next day’s shooting schedule, they used to plan out how they could squeeze in the remaining scenes and complete the shoot in the given time period. This practice really helped in terms of the work getting done quickly and it led to the proper communication and involvement between the actors and the team.

Let’s see whether this behind the camera work experience kindles any creative fire for Sai!!!
