10) Dolby Walya Bolaav Majhya DJ La (Jaundya Na Balasaheb)
‘This is the sound of Ajay-Atul’, this tagline probably defines Marathi film music in 2016. Sung by a unique voice, Nagesh Morwekar & filled with uniquely quirky lyrics by Ajay. ‘Dolbywalya’ from ‘Jaundya Na Balasaheb’ has become a crowd favorite in no time. It’s been playing at every public festivals & events all over Maharashtra!

9) O Kaka (YZ)
This fantastical fun song written by the super talented Kshitij Patwardhan, sung by rockstar Adarsh Shinde & composed by the trio of Hrishikesh, Saurabh & Jasraj is one of its kind in every way. It literally causes ‘havoc’ to the conventional idea of an item song. The best part is the commentary that this song makes on love, relationships & everything in between! ‘O Kaka’ transcends the theme of ‘YZ’ which is an integral part of the film.

8) Labbad Gabbad (Half Ticket)
‘Half Ticket’ was a special film, & its music was equally special & unique. All the songs are so pleasing to hear & can be heard repeatedly. We choose ‘Labbad Gabbad’ for its strangeness that creates a feel of a magical world! The lyrics by Kshitij Patwardhan again are extremely important here & so are the vocals by Harshawardhan Wavare & Aditya Patekar.

7) Baba – Priyanka Chopra (Ventilator)
How often do we find a song that works as the perfect promotional piece for the film & reflects the heart & soul of a film! ‘Baba’ from Ventilator is one such beauty. Priyanka Chopra’s mesmerizing voice makes you feel ‘at peace’ whenever you listen to it. Young composers Rohan & Rohan also deserve credit for their soulful sound in this song.

6) Vaat Disu De (Jaundya Na Balasaheb)
By a far distance the most underrated song of 2016. In a way it’s a typical Ajay-Atul classic & still sounds exceptionally fresh. Moreover it also helps the narrative of the film & communicates more than any scene or dialogue from the film ‘Jaundya Na Balasaheb’. This song inspires us to keep fighting our battles even in dark times, as the path of honesty & hard work can change our fortune!

5) Mituni Lochne
The ultimate grandfather-grandchildren song from ‘Natsamrat’, flows like pure river water through us every time we listen to it. The way this song engrosses tragedy with happiness is purely magical. Composer Ajit Parab, singer Vijaypraksh & especially the lyricist Guru Thakur deserve tons of love for giving us this song.

4) Aatach Baya Ka Baavarla
Ok we all know, all songs of ‘Sairat’ are a must in this list. So here’s the first, one that represents the energy & style of ‘Archana Patil’ aka ‘Archi’ in its purest form. The blend of soft core melody & hard rock somehow symbolizes the character of ‘Archi’ & the future graph of her character in the film. As the dashing ‘Archi’ is later transformed into an emotionally deep human who can last the toughest test of time.

3) Sairat Jhala Ji
The title song of ‘Sairat’ the ultimate romantic duet, is so extremely important to the narrative. Through this song we experience Archi & Parshya’s love that has now starting to blossom. Ajay’s voice in this song doesn’t just hit our emotional chords but also our spiritual self. Both Ajay-Atul consider this song as their most favorite in the album.

2) Zingaat
At number two is the song on which the whole of India (& even abroad) danced in 2016. The raw energy that is complemented by technical brilliance by the musical maestros Ajay-Atul makes ‘Zingaat’ a dance number that tempts small & old, rich & poor, smart & dumb all of them to come on the dance floor. We all must have danced countless times on ‘Zingaat’! Haven’t we?

1) Yad Lagla
‘Oh Parshya..Tikda Archi Aaliy ARCHI’ & Parshya Jumps off the boat in slow motion & the crowd whistles, cheers & aplaudes our hero who is on his way to meet his heroine at the well! Magic, pure cinematic & musical magic! ‘Yad Lagla’ was the very first song that came out through the teasers of ‘Sairat’ & it remains the most magical Marathi song of recent times & even in the future it will difficult for any other song to replace it.

Ganapati Bappa Morya! Yes, Ganesh Chaturthi is here, and the joyous cries of Ganesh bhakts are going to ring through the air. Maharashtra’s favourite God is going to be the center of attention of the state for a couple of weeks now. The whole atmosphere is going to drown in the Ganpati fever!

Now, no Sarvajanik Ganapati is complete with a loudspeaker blaring music. They would do better if they restrict the music coming out of the speakers to devotional songs. Ganapati has also been a God that has had a song dedicated to it in many of our films; these days one Ganapati song is mandatorily added to nearly every Marathi film. So, just to make it easier for the Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandals, we have come up with a list of Ganpati songs which we consider to be the best of the lot. We have restricted ourselves to Hindi and Marathi films of the recent past.

So here we go,
Morya Re- Don ( 2006 )
Composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and sung by Shankar Mahadevan himself, the song is still a popular Hindi Ganpati song. What set this song apart is that the composition has a vintage Bollywood feel to it and isn’t exactly a devotional song/aarati. Javed Akhtar has also worked magic with the lyrics. The song is an adieu to the God during the visarjan ceremony.

Hey Lambodar – Morya ( 2011 )
This song from Avadhoot Gupte’s Morya has to be one of the most innovative experiments in composing a Ganapati song. It has been composed in the style of a Qawwali and the producers even got the recently deceased legendary singer Amjad Sabri to sing for them.

Deva Shree Ganesha – Agneepath ( 2012 )
A devotional song alright, but packed with such fervor that it never fails to give you goosebumps, courtesy the arrangement. Ajay-Atul shot to fame in Bollywood with this album which had other quite a few lovely songs. If you ever need to get your adrenalin pumping, this song should work most times! It has also been sung by Ajay with great energy.

Sur Niragas Ho – Katyar Kaljat Ghusli (2014)
The musical, which was a big Marathi hit last year, was full of delectable songs. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy had reworked a few of the original classics from the play on which the film is based, and had also composed a few original. ‘Sur Niragas Ho’ is one of them. Sung by Shankar Mahadeven in his typical elegance, it indeed sounds like an innocent prayer to the Elephant God.

Shree Ganeshaya Dheemahi
Originally from Ajay Atul’s album Vishwa Vinayak, this divine composition was used again in the Mahesh Manjrekar film Viruddh starring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. I wonder there would be anybody else more competent to sing this song other than Shankar Mahadevan. The highly nuanced and graceful composition and voice put you into a trance of sorts.

Ajay-Atul are stars in their own right of Marathi cinema. They have been composing beautiful music for a while now and have also been the rare Marathi composers who have successfully crossed over into the Hindi film industry. Their recent album, Sairat, has also become a rage, so I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to list my favorite 15 songs of them.This post is not a review of their music, as my knowledge of music is pretty limited, but it is just an attempt to explore the music composed by them over the years which has made them hugely popular in Maharashtra.I am going in reverse chronology.

So, here we go:

Jhingat

These two have a penchant for belting out dance numbers and they strike gold with Zhingat. Ajay-Atul have weaved magic here, especially with those wacky lyrics. This sure to replace Shantabai in all marathi weddings this year.

Sairat Zaala ji

The fantastic duosoar to new heights with this song. The composition is just top quality here. This more of a haunting melody with such sweeping orchestration. The have put this combination to great effect.

Yaad Lagla

Their second big project in Marathi after Natrang and many are of the opinion that it surpasses Natrang in versatility and skill. The flute piece in the beginning of the song will melt even the most unreceptive to music. A playful romantic song, the Sairat album starts with a bang.

Adhir Man Zhale

Ajay-Atul are highly versatile composers with no particular kind of song out of reach for them. Here they show they can compose these soft melodies with ease. Nilkhant Master is the only marathi film they did in the year 2015 which had a few other lovely songs as well. This though is my favourite.

Tujhya Pirticha Vinchu

Their return to marathi cinema after the popular Agneepath was no less popular than their last marathi album before this, Natrang. Fandry was a festival hit and it had no songs. The behemoth marathi production house Zee picked it up and came up with a brilliant marketing idea to promote the film with a song and that too by Ajay-Atul. The lyrics here too are written by Ajay-Atul.

Apsara Ali

Natrang was a wildly popular album with nearly every song as good as another. But in my books Apsara Ali pips all others to become the best song of the album. The orchestration here is just gorgeous. BelaShende low and soft vocals create a great base on which the chorus soars high. One of Ajay-Atul’s best songs!

Khel Mandala

Ajay-Atul made it clear that deep, contemplative songs are not out of their reach either. If they could compose a catchy ‘Vajle Ki Bara’, they were also capable enough to compose this song with depth and emotion.

Wajle Ki Bara

Natrang soared Ajay-Atul’s popularity to gigantic proportions in Maharashtra. Ajay also developed a reputation as a singer by crooning songs like ‘Khel Mandala’ in the album. Zee also helped their cause by going all-out on the promotion of the songs and the film. This song fits into the traditional lavani song which is loved by all in Mahrashtra. The naughty yet rustic lyrics by Guru Thakur played a major role in the popularity of the song. ‘Mala ZauDya Na Ghari, Ata Vajle Ki Bara’ can be roughly translated to ‘Let me go home, as the clock has struck twelve’. Again, the live version here is more enjoyable.

Jeev Rangala

Sung expertly by Hariharan and Shreya Ghosal this is probably Ajay-Atul’s finest song. The sensuality and the gorgeous cinematography by Sanjay Jadhav take it to an altogether different level. The depth, the diversity, the ingenuity and, most importantly, the passion for their music that Ajay-Atul have is very clear from the above.

Lallati Bhandar

Jogwa won the duo critical acclaim in the form of a national award for the best music directors. This song is a ‘gondhal’ which is a traditional folk form of dramatic narration of mythical stories.The song is about the Goddess Yellamma which is being sung by the ‘devadasis’ in the film. Ajay himself has lent his voice to the song.

Navachi Gojiri

Ajay-Atul proved from this song that sweet ‘Dil Hain Chota Sa’ type numbers are also not out of their reach. This upbeat number from the film ‘Oxygen’ has been sung by Vaishali Samant and the charming lyrics are written by Soumitra(Kishore Kadam).

Navri Ali

This one is an apt example of their composing talent. The indigenous use of various sounds is very impressive. Wonderfully written by Guru Thakur, the song is supposed to be a ‘lagingeet’ the type of songs which are sung during wedding ceremonies. This live version probably enhances the beauty of the song.

Kombadi Palaali

The original version of Chikni-Chameli. A completely crazy track. This showed that they could compose wacky tunes too. The absolutely wild lyrics by Jitendra Joshi is in my opinion what makes the Hindi version pale in comparsion to this one. Interestingly, Jitendra Joshi has also written the deeply romantic lyrics for the Sonu Nigam song Cham Cham in Striker. Also, AnandShinde’s voice is quite helpful in adding to the craziness in KombadiPallali. In the hindi version Sunidhi’s voice might have been more effective. Notice the crowd going wild.

Man Udhan Varyache

The duo also composed original songs for Aga BaiArechya which was their ticket to fame. This song is easily one of their most loved songs. Soulfully sung by noted singer Shankar Mahadevan and the beautiful lyrics are written by Guru Thakur. The song has been nicely shot too.

Malhar Wari

This is a song from Ajay-Atul’s first album ‘Vishwavinayak’. Also sung by both of them, the words of the songs are traditional folk. Ram Gopal Verma helped them launch this album as they were also giving music for his Gayab then. Kedar Shinde has very nicely used it in his enjoyable film Aga Bai Arechya which was an adaptation of the Hollywood film ‘What Women Want’.
