  • Review: Mogra Phulaalaa (2019)
  • Director: Shrabani Deodhar
  • Star Cast: Swapnil Joshi, Sai Shakti Anand, Neena Kulkarni, Chandrakant Kulkarni, Sandeep Pathak, Anand Ingle, Vighnesh Joshi, Sonam Nishandar, Milind Phatak, Samidha Guru & child artist: Saanvi Ratnalikar
  • Screenplay: Sachin Mote
  • Producer: Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik Nishandar

Quick Viewpoint: Mogra Phulaalaa knows exactly whom it’s catering it’s film too, mainly to a value driven Maharashtrian middle class and it both satisfies them & also pushes the envelope by encompassing modern values in it!

What Works?

  • The film starts off on a very accessible lighter note. Yes, it has a bit of out of the place logic at times, but there’s soul in most of the lighter moments. Swapnil Joshi mostly wins in major parts though in some he becomes a bit too typical man child. Sandeep Pathak’s character succeeds pretty well in giving the film a lighter tone.
  • The writing of the film (by Sachin Mote) is it’s biggest strength, both in the screenplay and in the dialogues. No scene in the film feels forced or placed just to fill in. The screenplay has a uniformity throughout.
  • The way film slowly & steadily establishes the love story between it’s two lead characters somehow reminds us of the old Basu Chatterjee romances, or even a classic Marathi film ‘Lapandav’ which was directed by the director of this film, Ms. Shrabani Deodhar! There’s lot of genuine charm in the love story of ‘Mogra Phulaalaa’ in fact that is what connects us with the film the most as we feel the two of them deserve to have a life together!
  • Chandrakant Kulkarni’s character (Madhya Kaka) is used smartly in the film. Basically it feels like he is playing himself (yes a slightly strict theatre director), but more than that he brings the third person perspective in the equation of Sunil (Swapnil) & his mother (Neena Kulkarni). The mother here is a bit possessive about her unmarried son. Being distanced from all of her other sons, Sunil is her only reason to live (though this is her version of the truth!). Madhya Kaka in many ways puts forth what we as audiences would feel like in this scenario!
  • Swapnil Joshi is a good actor but with limitations. As said above he tends to be a very typical man child by the start of the film. But later on when the film swings completely in drama Swapnil Joshi scores gold during the emotional moments! That feels like his home ground, where he is easily one of the best in the business!

What Fails?

  • The transition of Swapnil Joshi’s character is a bit abrupt. From a mother abiding simple minded man child into a matured man who knows what he wants and has the strength to go & get it! Not that we needed more logical reasons for this transition but his sudden coming of age is a bit distracting from the actual plot of the film!
  • The lead actress Sai Shakti Anand is clearly & boldly the biggest drawback of the film. She is decent in the lighter moments but her limitations are clearly visible in the dramatic moments of the film. Mainly because the whole emotional strength of the film relies first & foremost on the shoulders of her character and the actor fails to do justice to it. Ironically she works in a play in the film and everyone believes she is a phenomenal actress!

Final Verdict: Mogra Phulaalaa is a treat for Swapnil Joshi fans & for those who might not be up for any technical and contextual experiments in Marathi films but enjoy a well written & decently conceived family drama in Marathi!

Mogra Phulaalaa‘ releases all over Maharashtra today. The film stars Swapnil Joshi in the lead in a never before seen avatar. While all of his fans are all excited for the film we would like to present to you top 5 reasons to not miss ‘Mogra Phulaalaa’ in theatres!

  • Swapnil Joshi’s Simple Minded Character
Swapnil Joshi has been mostly known for his chocolate boy image. Though every now & then Swapnil has pushed himself and has surprised the audiences with different & challenging roles. ‘Mogra Phulaalaa’ is one such different role where we won’t see Swapnil in a larger than life image but as a common middle aged man who is in his mid 30s and is still unmarried.

Swwapnil Joshi - Mogra Phulala

  • Neena Kulkarni’s Multi Layered Mother
While Swapnil’s Joshi’s character is of a simple minded man. His mother played by senior actress Neena Kulkarni seems a very a multi layered character. On one hand she obviously loves her son and wants the best for him, but somewhere she also inhibits her son from following his heart!

Neena Kulkarni - Mogra Phulala

  • Shrabani Deodhar’s Assured Direction
Shrabani Deodhar is one of the most respected female filmmakers to make films in Marathi. Back in the 90s she had made films like ‘Lapandav’ & ‘Sarkarnama’ which are today considered as cult classics. She recently made a caper comedy which was also appreciated and now with ‘Mogra Phulaalaa’ she is exploring a new side of her with an light hearted yet emotional family drama.
  • Relatable Family Drama for Today’s Times
While family dramas have always been a staple for Marathi cinema. Nowadays many family drama films fall flat on their face as they fail to understand the changing times and the changing taste of audiences. Hence ‘Mogra Phulaalaa’ is a film that suits sensibilities of today’s family audiences of today’s times. The dramatic part of the film is much subtle & it has a nice blend of light heartedness & romance.
  • The Rest of the Ensemble Cast
Sai Deodhar a popular name on Hindi Television is making her debut in Marathi through ‘Mogra Phulaalaa’. Along with that the film has a diversely talented star cast of Sandeep Pathak, Chandrakant Kulkarni, Anand Ingle, Vighnesh Joshi, Samidha Guru, Sonamm Nishandar & others.

Upcoming Zee5 original series ‘Hutatma’ starring Anjali Patil, Vaibhav Tatwawadi, Sachin Khedekar is finally exploring that chapter in the history of Maharashtra where many activists & those fighting for a united Maharashtra lost their lives. Even after so many years we have hardly seen any of it in our pop culture, whether it’s theatre, films, T.V. or the web platform! But now on Zee5’s web platform this history will finally get explored.

The series will be available in both Marathi & Hindi for the audiences on Zee5. The teaser of the series was recently uploaded on the platform & it truly looks very powerful & realistic. Anjali Patil especially steals the show in the last shot of the teaser. This series is directed by Jayprad Desai who has a history of creating fiction related to politics. He previously made the political thriller ‘Nagrik’ starring Sachin Khedekar.

The series also stars Abhay Mahajan, Anand Ingle and many other Marathi actors. Web platforms are truly diminishing the boundaries of language, culture & even subjects. Subjects that cannot be shown on Television can be explored through this platform with complete creative freedom for the creators!

Ye Re Ye Re Paisa Marathi Movie Review:

Ye Re Ye Re Paisa will certainly manage to give you a few laughs. But the overall complications make the film difficult to sit through. Sanjay Jadhav before his Duniyadari days made two dark thrillers (Ringa Ringa & Checkmate) which could stand head & shoulders above other Marathi films in that genre. This director is capable of pulling off different visual & cinematic feats if he wishes too. But his obsession of making what sells has made him restrict his abilities.

Ye Re Ye Re Paisa in parts can remind us of any random south Indian movie dubbed in Hindi, telecasted on every movie channel these days. And in parts it also reminds us of 90s Bollywood masala movies. The problem is not what it reminds us of! The problem is it doesn’t add anything to them! The plot is an excuse for a comedy of errors. However the errors on their own need to have some strength to derive situational comedy out of them. This isn’t the case.

At some point in the first half we are hinted that the film would now turn towards the ‘heist comedy’ genre. But the heist part is tastelessly silly & never really explored in depth. So the film relies almost completely on characters & actors playing them to win over the audiences. Sanjay Narvekar as ‘Anna’ a loan recovery agent cum gangster succeeds to some extent in getting our acceptance. Sadly Siddharth Jadhav who has a terrific sense of comic timing & has been a part of quite of few crazy comedies helmed by Kedar Shinde doesn’t make any impact. Umesh Kamat is usually a decent actor but he doesn’t have a lot to do in the film. Maybe a love track would have made Umesh a little more important to some audiences. Tejaswini Pandit has many limitations as an actress, limitations which come in way of comedy! Anand Ingle plays a formulaic supporting comic character seen usually in those dubbed south Indian movies. Bijoy Anand seen long back in a few Hindi films plays an interesting character which needed a better treatment. Mrinal Kulkarni’s character though important to the film, has little to do.

The film is strangely edited to speed up the narrative. An experiment (I am not sure if that’s the right word) that only confuses the audiences rather than amusing them. It’s again a trait from south India, where a few dedicated fans of those films believe that too much editing is good editing! One of the positives of the film is it’s visual feel though a more serious narrative could have really complemented it. ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ definitely had potential if it had some sort of situational humour in it & a better written screenplay.

The film used different color grading for an important narrative scene in different ways representing the change of perspective. Surprisingly it is really well executed & appears as inventive as it sounds. But again all of this deserved a better film to belong too. Sanjay Jadhav’s Duniyadari was in my opinion a poorly directed film, but it had it’s strength in the content through the original novel. His other films after Duniyadari were average in every way. Ye Re Ye Re Paisa is a film that is disastrously fast paced & loud, yet there are few moments that tell it had potential. An ideal commercial entertainer doesn’t necessarily need a thought provoking message or a moral of the story & it can work on simply moments that are entertaining & have a repeat value to them. Ye Re Ye Re Paisa on the whole is an exhausting experience, a one line narrative that was narrated as if the film was ‘Interstellar’ or ‘Inception’.

Overall:

If you’ve seen all the promos & the trailer of the film you’ve already seen the better comic punches. The rest of the punches never really work making this journey full of sound & fury signifying nothing!

FU Marathi Movie Review :

That frame from Sairat where our hero ‘Parshya’ jumps straight into the water from the boat to catch a glimpse of ‘Aarchi’ gave us goosebumps! We couldn’t stop ourselves from whistling in the theatre! And rightfully so! Nagraj Manjule introduced us to this new form of ‘Hero’ who post the success of Sairat became an icon! Aakash Thosar became an household name. His second film too was hugely anticipated. But director Mahesh Manjrekar’s attempt to present Aakash in a brand new urban dude avatar has failed miserably in ‘FU’.

Not once but countless times his English dialogues in the film sound forced & unnatural. And most importantly they keep inducing unintentional humour. However it doesn’t mean this is FU’s biggest flaw. It’s one of the many flaws that this film possess. FU suffers from the very basic stage of having a connective plot that uses the story & screenplay elements to give us the feel of an interlinked collection of situations & incidents, the basic form of a film!

Akash Thosar - FU Still PhotosThe first half is a pointless collage of shameless gimmicks. For example there’s this specific ‘Gachhi’ scene which seems to be forcefully added to justify the ‘Gachhi’ song sung by Salman Khan. This scene is so pitiful that even a Kashmera Shah’s body exposure feels tragic, out of place & outright disgusting. Many such scenes must have been made to induce humour but all they manage to induce is boredom.

The Songs of FU are a different topic altogether. The audience loves songs? Don’t they? So they’ve forcefully included around 12-14 songs in the film! But not even a single manages to please us. It’s not necessary for a film that calls itself a “Musical” so many songs & that too when there aren’t any situations in the film to have so many songs. Films like Sairat, Jogwa have been called musicals with the presence of mere 4-5 songs.

Akash Thosar & Vaidehi Parshurami - FUNow let’s move towards the most unfortunate, miserable part of FU, the conflict. There three basic plots that involve three male characters from the film. But the problem is that none of the plots appear to be the main cobflict, they all appear like side plots. One is Aakash’s love story with Vaidehi Parashurami, another is Satya Manjrekar’s’s infatuation with his professor Isha Koppikar & the third belongs to the character ‘Mak’ played by Shubham Kirodian. Aakash & Vaidehi’s love story is pointless from the word go. Satya’s conflict is even worse, where at a point the film crosses all boundaries of sanity & romanticizes hooliganism with a terrifying sound design & background score. The third involving ‘Mak’ did have a possibility to make sense. Sanskruti Balgude plays Mak’s girlfriend, one who secretly only uses Mak but loves someone else. But then Sanskruti realizes her mistake & the whole plot excersise becomes pointless.

None of the above mentioned actors shine whatsoever though Vaidehi Parashurami holds her ground to some extent, but her character is so underdeveloped & logic defying that most of it goes in vain. Apart from this Mayuresh Pem stands out among the male cast for his sheer talent of performing well no matter what the plot-scene-dialogues are!

Akash Thosar & Mahesh Manjrekar Fu On Shoot PhotosMahesh Manjrekar is one of the most respected filmmakers in Marathi. And even beyond Marathi, the man that gave an era defining film like ‘Vaastav’. It’s both shocking & sad to see a film like ‘FU’ from him at this stage of his career.

Overall:

FU is a film that takes its audience from granted, & in today’s times it’s a unforgivable sin.

Thank God! That’s what we said after watching FU Trailer (Friendship Unlimited trailer). First of all, it is not a love story of school-going kids. Second, the story is set in current era and not in the backdrop of 70s or 80s. The film has huge expectations since beginning as it stars Sairat star Akash Thosar in the lead role. The trailer is very fresh and not unlike many Marathi films. If Sairat was all about rural youth, FU takes a completely different turn and defines urban youth in a playful way.

Akash looks very convincing as an urban college youth. His look brings out a stylish yet simple persona very charmingly. As the name suggests it is a story of college friends who think nothing can set them apart. Apart from Akash and Satya, the gang of friends includes Mayuresh Pem, Pawandeep and Shubham Kirodian. The film has a definitely very big star cast including Sharad Ponkshe, Sachin Khedekar, Boman Irani, Madhav Deochakke, Bharati Achrekar, Anand Ingle, Isha Koppikar, Chetan Hasraj and Mahesh Manjrekar. The female lead has been taken care by glamorous girls like Sanskruti Balgude and Vaidehi Parshurami. The film also has sizzling diva Kashmira Shah in a very important role.

The trailer is very colorful and very smartly edited. It gives us a glimpse of the story, at the same time makes some interesting points about the film. The music by Sameer Saptiskar and Vishal Mishra is already topping the charts.

The film promises us a complete entertainer with some cracking performances by the lead cast. Do  not forget to watch this college romance comedy in the theatres on 2 June all over Maharashtra.

Salman Khan has sung a Gachhi Marathi song for Mahesh Manjrekar’s new youth-centric film “FU (Friendship Unlimited)” The song is composed by Sameer Saptiskar and along with Salman Khan, Vishal Mishra has lent his vocals for the song. The tune of the song is very much similar to old classic song “Pancchi Banoo Udti Firoo”. Salman Khan’s voice is very great to listen!

However, the song has some witty and double-meaning lyrics. Sachin Pathak has given some catchy lines for the song. The song has been picturized on Akash Thosar, Satya Manjrekar, Vaidehi Parshurami, Sanskruti Balgude and Kashmira Shah. Kashmira looks absolutely gorgeous in this song. The dance moves are very simple and Akash and Satya follow them perfectly. We loved glamerous look of Vaidehi and Sanskruti. Girls are already waiting for this film as this will be second film of Akash. Akash was last seen in Nagraj Manjule’s Sairat as male lead Parashya.

The film is directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and produced by T-Series.
